St. John's in Springfield-what do you think?

I am considering working at St. John's Hospital in Springfield on their telemetry floor. Has anyone worked there or works there right now that would be willing to tell me what its like? Do they treat patients well? Do they have good orientation for a new grad? Also I will be relocating form Iowa if I do take the job....what is the cost of living like? They don't pay very much:(

I have worked @ St. John's in Springfield for 10 years. Administration holds the all staff, drs, nurses, cna, techs, to very high standards and patients receive excellent care. You are right the salary is low. Administration says that salaries are conumserate with the cost of living. So if you are interested in making top dollar look some where else.

Thank you so much for your input! I just told them today that I would take it! So I am relocating in 10 days!! Hoping to find a cheap apartment close to the hospital. Money is not that important to me and what they pay should be enough..you are right..the cost of living does seem to be lower.

congrats on your new job! I like working at SJ very much. Yeah, the pay is not so great, but it is comparable to what you would make at any other nursing job in the area.

There are TONS of apartments in Springfield! I know there is a complex about a block south of the hospital called La La Lee. I know nothing about this complex, only that it is very close. I just think the name is funny!

haha...I completely laughed too when I heard about the La La Lee apartments form the HR person at St. Johns..the only problem with them is that they only have double bedroom right now(single bedroom is what I am looking for) without laundry on site...and I do not have a washer and dryer..so I wil probably not live there. How about churches? are there churches around the hospital? grocerry stores? walking distance? ...don't have a car:(

I am a new grad and I am sooo nervous....I hope I don't mess up:)

Welcome to the neighborhood! I'm a nursing student with the St. Johns program, so I'm doing my clinicals there. I actually choose this particular program because of the "high standards" klr24371 talked about. Springfield is full of apartments, churches and grocery stores, so finding something close to the hospital shouldn't be a problem. There's also a decent bus system, so even without a car, getting around shouldn't be too tough either.

I do have a question...do you know a place where I can get really cheap navy scrubs? I am wondering if I should look at walmart here before I move or look for a uniform store there in Springfield. I am thinkining..cheaper the better:)

Cheap (err - inexpensive) is good. There's a place near my house that sells used sets, the Springfield craigslist has a bunch for sale and there's 2 or 3 shops in town where you can get new ones, along with good ol' Wally World and Dollar General. You also have the option of buying them from the St. John's Co-workers Store. If I remember correctly, they even offer a payroll deduction method for payment - but you might want to double check that.

yep you can get scrubs from the co-worker store (lots of other stuff, too) by just flashing your name badge! (payroll decuction, of course)

I heard that the scrubs are a little more expensive at the coworker store. I hope I can find cute ones..even if its just plain old navy:)
