U.S.A. Missouri

I graduated in Dec 2009. Honestly, I felt lost after school. I questioned my decision to go to nursing school and so I took time to evaluate my choices and my life. I love being around people, I knew i wanted a job where I could help otherr. Now I'm trying to find a job and having the hardest time! Hospitals are telling me they want the newest grads and Im getting passed up! What kinds of places should I be applying to now? Nursing homes? Smaller hospitals? Help! Im losing hope that I will find a job that I love!!!

Cant find no job for new grad...have applied to every hospital in mo,alton, grantie city,LTAC everywhere....no luck...no call backs.....have been applyn in Texas and get 2 interviews,,,wow

That's interesting because I hear things are bad for new grads in TX too. Just read through the TX forums to see what new grads are saying. I guess it depends on where you are applying, since some of the remote areas have a tough time filling positions. Anyway, good luck if you get hired on in TX and end up moving there. I would love to live and work in TX some day.

I hope you all that are looking have taken advantage of job fairs and new graduate dinners/meet and greets. I went to meet and greets at Christian Northeast and Depaul (where reps from all of SSM hospitals met with us) and really worked the rooms. I had my resume and cover letter readily available and spoke to reps from various units. I had a job offer within two weeks of my meet and greet for SSM, well before my graduation date. I will be coming up on my first year anniversary in June. It really pays to network. If you don't have a job offer before you graduate, don't let that discourage you. I know plenty of people who got jobs after graduation, sometimes months afterwards. Just apply everywhere you can, and don't just rely on online applications. Sometimes you have to get out and be seen by prospective employers.

How do u find out when they r having the meet and greets

Usually the hospitals send notices to the schools. The leaders of my nursing program made sure we were aware of various events. Our student nurse association did as well. I also heard advertisements on the radio and just went. You could also contact the various hospitals and find out if/when they are having an event for new grads.

OMG! This sounds like a nightmare. I've just been accepted in nursing school and I have always believed there is a nursing shortage. Has anyone tried looking in different states? That's what I would do.

I am not sure where your at now, but get a job in the field. Nurse tech, psych tech, something where you will be networking with managers who hire. Out of my class, most of us who were working in the field were able to land a job with our current employer. One person who didn't, got a job by going what I call "old school" she just dressed up professionally, took her resumes and cover letters out to hospitals, found the unit managers and gave them a resume.

Some people did not like it, but the one who hired her did like it. It is gutsy but possible, the reliance on the internet to apply can actually work against you.

Another person started to volunteer at a hospital and a hospice, she was able to meet the right people and land a prn job after graduation.

Bottom line, take any job that will give you the title RN once you graduate. Like one old nurse told me, "you can always find some work as a nurse, you may not like it, but you can find it".

I think if you are willing to relocate, things are starting to look better somewhat. Nursing is kind of on or off. When it rains it pours but when is dry is like the driest deserts out there, and that's is the case with new grads. No one knows how long it will take until they are interested in NG's again, so a few places take a few. But you could be a lucky one...and quite frankly it's how it goes...by luck, it's like playing the lotto but your odd are a little better but you still have odds which are against you. It is a sad thing but nurses go through nursing schools and they can't even think about such thing because they are so busy putting out fires but they don't know (or can't conceive) that the hardest part is yet to come. I am so sorry to say that to you, but not only nurses eat their young but hospitals do to.

There are plenty of jobs here in the KC area. Every hospital has listings on their site, and I have new grad friends who have found jobs. I graduated with my LPN last May, and had a job 2 weeks before I graduated. I actually work 2 FT jobs at the moment, and have had several calls in the past few months from potential employers. Jobs are out there...you just have to find them! :) And since people ALWAYS wanna know, I make $16/hr in a doctors office M-F, and $20/hr in a group home on the weekend shift.
