Info for nursing scholarships in St. Louis, MO area

Usually you need to check with the financial aid office of the school you are interested in attending and then apply for any that you think you might qualify for. Then you wait to see if they award you with one. I believe that you need to already be admitted into the school before applying. This has been my only experience, but someone out there may know of other alternatives.

Do some searches on allnurses for "scholarships" and also google that. I know there are a few sites with nursing scholarships out there, but my husband makes too much for us to qualify while I was in school.

Missouri Department of Health offers a loan program ($5,000 per year) and in exchange for this money - you agree to work in a area of need for each year you participate in the program.

The website has a great FAQ section and you can always email them to ask additional questions if you can't find your answer.

There are some qualifications for the school that must be met in regards to location and NCLEX pass rates but the website outlines it all and again - they are great to answer any questions you might have.

And "high need" doesn't equate to low populated or low income areas of MO either - it's based solely on the health care professional shortage areas outline by the Federal Government.

You might already know, but many hospitals have tuition reimbursement, loan forgiveness, and even some competitive scholarships. A lot have up to $5,000 in tuition reimbursement if you work full-time while in school (not always a possibility). St. Anthony's hospital has a scholarship for "members of the community" that are pursuing an education in healthcare. "Members of the community" are residents of most every zip code in st. louis. (They have no scholarships for their own employees by the way, which I think stinks). Tylenol and Jasco uniform both have scholarships which I applied for- they are a long shot, but someone's gotta win them right?

I would definitely get a job as a tech somewhere by the way, provides you with invaluable experience, gets you better pay as a nurse in some hospitals (Barnes and St. Johns, as I have found out so far) and gets your foot in the door at that hospital/hospital system as a nurse, which may be especially important if you want to get into a competitive nurse fellowship there. Also, I forgot to say that SLUH has a program where you sign a contract to work there for X amount of years after graduation and they will write you a check for school for X amount of dollars per year of promised time. This is the only hospital that I know of that will do this BEFORE you incur the debt.

You have to know that you want to work there though!!!!!!!!!! Kind of risky business, but if you know you want to do adult/gero and like serving the city demographic, maybe........

I don't know how close you have to be to graduation, but it's worth a phone call to their HR.

The school financial aid office is the 1st place to check...then research what places you want to work to see how mcuh loan forgiveness they offer...nothing's free - they usually come with a work committment of like 2 years...be careful & Good luck!!! What school are you attending?
