Balancing nursing school and life

I'm a single mom of 4 and I homeschool my kiddos. I'm done with my prereqs and gen eds and will start at JHC in Jan. In your opinion is it at all possible to continue to homeschool while in nursing school? I know people work full-time and are nursing students. I also know young single nursing students who party 5 nights a week instead of studying and still get through the program.

well first and foremost.. if you put your mind to it.. anything can be achieved. its all about making a balance in your own life that works for you and your children. i am a nursing student due to graduate in Dec. and although i have no children, you wouldnt believe the stories of most women in my class that are makin it everyday. i have no clue how they can do it.. but if they can.. anyone can.. good luck on your decison!!

chembob . . . First off, you DO work. You may not be employed, but you work as a full time mom!! ;) I have five young daughters, ages 8, 6, 4, 3, and 14 months and I too work as a full time mom. We also homeschool. Since we do not use childcare my husband is caring for and teaching the children while I'm in school and then he goes to work when I'm home. So I have no study time during the days at all because I can't study with 5 young children who are awake. I am very active with my children (not one of those tv watchers and bon bon eaters LOL) when I'm home with them. I study after they go to bed at night which is from about 9:30 p.m. until 1am. Last semester was ROUGH because I was still breastfeeding the baby and I'm always REALLY REALLY tired when I'm breastfeeding so I wasn't really able to study much at all so my 4.0 dropped because I got a 90% and 92% in my nursing courses and you have to have 93% to get an A in my program, but that's okay! I told myself going into int that I would need to be able to accept B's. Soooo..... I say it's definitely doable. It also depends on how easily things come to you. I tend to learn stuff pretty quickly so I just need review in order to make it stick. I also have weekends to study. After this second semester I will have completed 50% of a traditional nursing program and I'm going to be finishing getting my RN through http://www.excelsior.edu because that will work MUCH better for my family. I already took the first exam through them (you can take the first two without being enrolled) and I plan to finish by summer next year. Anyway, that's something you can look at which might work well due to your situation too. Good luck in whatever you decide!!

LOL!!! I just realized this was orginally posted in 2005. Oh well, maybe it will be of help to someone someday anyway.

I am a single mom with an ex who lives close by and is retired (but not helping my kids situation in terms of helping them feel secure that I am there for them even though I have school and friends-he doesn't think I am entitled to have a life of my own).

I plan to homeschool the kids again (we tried school-it was not helpful-long story there) while I finish my prereqs -just one semester. I will be taking my kids on campus. Then I start my clinicals the following semester.

I need support.

Good luck there....it sounds like you're going to have your hands full all the way around. How old are your kids? If this gets to be overwhelming and you are set on homeschooling, perhaps nursing school will have to take a backseat for awhile? Otherwise, I hope you have a lot of support close by emotionally and physically with your kids...

Best wishes!!

Wow! You will be out of lecture and clinicals by 12? That is amazing. Is this a full time program or part time? I will be in school or clinicals pretty much 7-4 or 5 every day m-f. I am totally jealous!
