Relocating to MN--part time work available?

U.S.A. Minnesota

My family may be relocating to the Woodbury/Stillwater/Hudson WI area from the state of Wyoming this spring, and I am interested in limited hour work. I graduated BSN in May 08 and passed NCLEX-RN in June; I have been working in public health as a contract nurse doing long-term care Medicaid evals (home based care waivers and nursing facility admission paperwork). However, I only work 8 hours per week, in order to stay home with my 2 year old and 3 month old!

Anyone out there know of limited-hour jobs? (12 hour/week or less?) I'd be willing to work 1 12-hr shift per week, two part-time days, hours here and there--I love inpatient medical, postpartum couplet care, and public/school health. However, any searches I have seen have a minimun of 2 12's/week or 20 hours. This is too much for me to be away from my kiddos.

Thanks! Interested to hear what everyone else thinks! We'll be scouting the area Dec 12-15th.

Maybe you could try a PRN position. Jobs are becoming limited here with the economy. Good Luck!

If you are going to be living near Stillwater, check out Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater. Small hospital but a great place to work. I work per diem there through Favorite Staffing (based in St.Paul), but I'm not sure what they offer as far as hours per week. Have you considered signing on as a casual employee?

Can you explain what a "casual" employee is? I have seen those on employment websites, but am unfamiliar with the term--we don't have those here in Wyoming!

Some hospitals offer "casual" positions where you pick up shifts when staffing is low. Not sure how it exactly works and facilities may vary in how they handle it, but one hospital I used to work for (in northern Minnesota) required you to work a certain amount of shifts in a 3-month period - I think it was 6. I knew one nurse there who would pick up quite a few shifts in the winter, when it was busier (she was ER/ICU) and work a lot, and then take a lot of time off in the summer. Not sure if Lakeview offers this, but it could be something to look into. If you do sign with a hospital as a casual though, you can't work for them through an agency. I would go on Lakeviews web site and maybe you can call their HR dept and talk to them before you go there. Good luck. You're gonna love Minnesota - yah, you betcha, and Stillwater is a really nice little town. Beautiful there. :typing
