Experienced nurses, I have a question for you...

Tomorrow, I have my interview for a position as a unit assistant. I will be interviewed by the nursing staff as they will be the ones I will be working most closely with. This goes for any field, but especially for critical care units since I am applying for an ICU position. WHAT WOULD YOU LOOK FOR IN A UNIT ASSISTANT? How can I better help the nursing staff in performing this position?

Thanks in advance!

You can help by only doing what you are legally allowed to do as a nurse assistant. You can help by being timely as possible with the vital signs, accuchecks, baths, linen changes, ambulating patients, keeping their water pitcher's refilled and extra cups and straws at their bedsides, and asking for help when you really need it in addition to offering help when you have spare time to do so. :) Does this help? I wish you well in your endeavors to work as a nurse assistant, and hope you get the job! :balloons:

Hi Cheerfuldoer,

Thanks for getting back to me. Actually the position is as a unit secretary, not a nursing assistant. But any response is better than none.

I would add that letting the nurse assigned to the patient know about vital sign changes, skin care concerns, decreased urine output, or poor appetite for a meal. ALWAYS let the staff know when you are going on break, lunch, or on a unit errand. Ask questions when there is something new and you are not as familiar with what needs to be done for a patient. Be kind to patients families, ICU is a scary place for most families. Smile, even when is it a bad shift. It makes the time go faster. Hope this helps.
