- May 24 by big al lpnMy coping strategy is to choke that down at the time of the distressing event. I will dredge it up latter and talk with another nurse or friend. Breakfast with a coworker after a long shift. Adult beverages. The trick is to not forget you crammed those feels down there, if you don't are them out they come out at you when you don't want them.
- May 24 by spinetiltOnly an RN for about a year now, but I'm already getting stressed. I get a lump in my throat when I see little kiddos coming in with bruises from child abuse. It makes me want to find the idiot that did it and return the favor, if you know what I mean. I lift really heavy weights (heavy for me) and play with my dogs. I call them my coping mechanisms. See #4 above. A little bit of that goes a long way. :-) (Or, if you are homo, remove the "Wo". Same applies)

- May 27 by nickknoxlpnI work in home end of life care. Finding a coping strategy was important! Most important is to turn the feelings off. Stay detached, and don't get involved with the family's personal life. It's easy to get close to the patient and the families - working in their home 12 hours a day 4 days a week it's hard not to. But when things get to me I usually hit the gym. It seems to help the most.

Having a good rant with nursing student besties works wonders because well you know that they are going through the same stuff. Sometimes if you have a good preceptor they can understand and talk you through some stuff, telling them that you never experienced this before...because face it at eighteen you don't have much life experience. For example I didn't know what ''DNR a.k.a NFR'' meant. Never heard of it before I started nursing, not the kind of thing you learn in school! My preceptor sat me down and explained it, then it made sense! Also when things are just like mildly upsetting or annoying rather than cry-worthy, I play guitar and sing away! When things are a lil bit tougher, journaling helps. If things get really upsetting, I call my mom :P

I do everything to the best of my ability, I push myself in critical situations to be the best I can be. I have no regrets so I don't dwell.
That is, I think, all one can do.
It was a struggle at first, but with experience, I don't even think about it now, it just happens.
