Who loves med-surg?

Specialties Med-Surg

I read thread after thread about everyone hating med-surg! As a new grad about to go into med-surg/tele, it's disheartening. I know there are people out there that love it, however.

I am extremely excited to dive into my new job, and I am most excited about the thing people dread - time management. It's oddly fun and satisfying to be crazy and get everything done (or the best I can) and my personality has always been that way. Bring on the challenge!

So who out there loves it? What's your favorite thing about it?

I loved med surg. I had to move to an outpatient setting because it fit my family schedule better, but I am looking forward to the day that I can return to med surg!

I really love this thread, I thought Med-Surg was okay in school but have been scared away from pursuing it as a new grad due to all the negative experiences I've read on here. Much appreciate the positivity!

I love med surg! I am leaving after 2 1/2 years to pursue a nursing specialty in the NICU but I will be taking some amazing lessons learned with me when I go. Time management is a process. It took me approximately 6 months to understand that focus on prioritization and delegation will greatly improve time management. Do NOT try to take everything on yourself just because you don't want anyone to "dislike" you. Everyone has a job to do and teamwork is the key. Nursing is a 24 hour job so remember to complete the tasks important in the care of your patient first, ensure your patient assessment is charted along with any changes, and if you are not certain about something, always ASK ASK ASK!!! Never assume!

I too, love Med/Surg!!! I love the variety of patients and if you love to learn new and exciting diseases, its the perfect place for you. Its never boring and very often comical. Most patients are wonderful and thankful. My biggest downside to med/surg is STAFFING!!!! 4 to 1 is doable, but 5 to 1 is pushing it. If you also happen to be the units charge that shift AND have a full assignment, things can get out of control!

I'm getting ready to start a new grad med-surg academy in 2 weeks. I'm not sure what type of unit to apply for once orientation is complete. Med-surg is so broad. Is there a certain unit that's best for new grads? Or does it matter? Thanks!

Specializes in Med surg..

Med- surg is great to start out and get experience in! Placeing foleys, NG's, caring for chest tubes ect is all good experience. I have worked med surg for almost a year now and still like it. You learn A LOT of assessment skills, when to call the MD, when to be worried etc. My sister has worked med-surg for 12 years and still loves it... SOMEHOW lol.. It really depends on the person if they want to move into something new after gaining experience or not. Everyone is different and some love it and some HATE it!

I enjoy my work in med-surg. Pros: the pts aren't usually dying unless it's expected. What I mean is that they aren't critically ill-usually!

I have learned how to spot problems- i.e. Pts who are actually very sick. Lots of experience doing basic nursing skills- assessments, ng tube management, g tube management, surgical site assesssments, etc.

Team work! My group of people I work with are pretty awesome! Last shift, I had 3 drug/ETOH withdrawal pts, 1 post op with very elevated BPs, and 1 sweet confused walkie-talkie. It was a very busy night! And my team helped me trouble shoot and problem solve! Even the doctor I had to call about the BP was nice.

Med-surg is a pretty decent place!!

I love med-surg! It brings me back to my roots in EMS. Wide range of patients. Good, close team, and we stay busy. Not mind-numbingly, feet-achingly, "I want to die" level busy (although those days do happen) , but we don't just sit and relax. I'm treated a whole lot better compared to my other facility, I have physicians, RNs, and APNs backing me, while I back them. Even as a CNA, I get to use my judgement, and I get to do a lot more than just vitals and check ins. It's fun, it's not easy, but it's not a burn out
