TSH testing

A friend was found to have abnormal TSH levels during a routine physical. First, the levels were .014...hyperthyroid. She went for an ultrasound, and a RAI test. The ultrasound showed multiple nodules, but the RAI was normal.

Then they re-tested her, and her TSH was 15.something..not sure exactly, but hypothyroid. They were thinking, maybe a lab error...so they tested her blood again about 4 days later, and then her TSH levels were 30.something.

Has anyone ever heard of this?

We are perplexed! And so is the doctor! And she is not on any meds that may influence hormone levels.

Thanks!

Thanks for replying!

Not sure about that. I can ask though...What would the tests for parathyroid be?

i truly don't know much about it but do know that TSH is also influenced by the parathyroid, which produces TRH (thryotropin-releasing hormone) which is produced by the hypothalamus and TSH is secreted in the pituitary in response to TRH levels.

perhaps an endicrinologist would be the one to consult.

best wishes,
