I am trying to organize a med-surg skills competency day, my first ever. Any ideas or thoughts on how to get staff engaged would be helpful. I plan on reviewing chest tubes, pressure ulcers, and trying to do something with lifepack and code cart. I would like to have 6 or 7 stations.

Hands on stations always work for me. They keep my attention and if I'm expected to teach back, you REALLY have my attention, lol.

you need to determine the hours it will be open and then the supplies need to be assembled. You need to get committments from people to instruct and write down a schedule for them. Who will be the back-up if that person is not able to attend? Determine how long it takes to complete each activity so when you advertise your event you can alert people as to how much time to allow (some will come in on off days and need to plan for babysitters). Keep it as regimented as possible or people will talk and goof off and the time gets away from everyone. I make sure the instructors have bottles of water. You can spend a lot of money making a theme and having it set up like a fun party atmosphere, but I have found that is expensive and does not gain me anything. Just being able to get in and get out is what the attendees are looking for.
