Still work in hospital?

U.S.A. Massachusetts

I had worked for hospital for several months and had been treated very strangely there. I worked very hard to achieve good care of my patients. As a nurse with one year experience, I did make some small mistakes, totally five in six months. I strongly felt that I have been treated unfairly, such as

1. I made some mistakes that other nurse make too. However, the managers, charge nurse and other mean nurses in this unit were very picky at my mistakes. It is not practical for any nurses in this unit not to make any mistake.

2. The manager took off my name from the staff list without any notice even I were still working there.

3. I get pay newbie pay and discouraged from staying in this unit by nurse manager "you are not an expert", although I think I am competent to take care of my patients to match my pay.

4. I signed two classes. The nurse educator took only my name off the class list without notifying me. I questioned and was told that new nurse in this unit are not allowed to take this class. But I found out other new nurses who signed the class took the class.

5. I was watched very closely and picked for any trivial mistakes I made working under huge stress.s.

6. Some nurses in the unit gave me very hard time and unfair attitude during shift reports.

I didn't argue with them and just left quietly. But I am so scared by this experience. I feel if they don;t like you, they would always find your mistakes and give you very hard time. I am a very nice person, not knowing how to argue and play the game. Should I still work in hospital setting? I do have offer from another hospital, but hesitating to take it now. Any advise? Is my above experience usual in hospitals here or, just because the people in the hospital I have been are not acting right?

Thanks a lot!

You will fine "mean" nurses anywhere you work..but the unit you worked at seems to have been toxic for you. I'm sorry that happened to you. If you have another job offer at another hospital I would definitely consider it. If you are not sure, ask if you can shadow for a day and get a feel for the place. As I said, there are bad apples anywhere you work, whether it's a hospital, doctor's office, etc. I wish all the best for you and keep us updated. If you don't mind my asking, where did you work? PM me for privacy if you'd like, just curious. :)

I agree, but more over here on the West Side. Massachusetts is where I am from, and my experiences there were great. Yeah, there were a few bad apples with bad attitudes, but I got over it, or maybe said something to shut them up already. When I worked in LTC it took me 6 months to prove that I wasn't some idiot off the street. Everyone loved me there after that, and I have numberous references and reccomendations from management.

Keep your head up, and don't let the negativity get to ya.

Seasoned nurses always tell me, "Don't let them get ya, there are always other places to work.":nurse:

Do you work at BMC?
