New position of "companion"

U.S.A. Maryland

Can anyone tell me more about a position I've taken at BWMC as a "companion". I go for training in a few weeks, and am curious what can I expect? I begin nursing school in September at AACC.

Thanks!!

Don't have a clue. What type of work will you be doing?

Specializes in Med-Surg/urology.

I recently applied for that job as well. I'm in a CNA program right now & should be licensed within the next couple of weeks so I've been looking for jobs & saw that one. From what I read about that position, you're supposed to be observing patients that are considered a danger to themselves & others, and help with some other minor stuff such as ambulation, etc. Do you currently have your CNA license?

To me is sounds like a patient sitter, when a confused patient can't be left alone they need a 1:1.Great job to have while in school.

Thanks for the response!

Yes, it's the "sitter/companion" position. I've never worked in a hospital, or in any healthcare capacity for that matter.

I'm not a CNA, and have applied to nursing school for the fall '09 session at AACC. My GPA is over 3.8, so I'm not so concerned about *getting* in, as being able to stay in! :))

All I do know of the position is basically what miiszkim0711 said, you observe patients deemed at risk "to harm themselves or others". Thanks Alexk49 for the encouraging words, that it's a "great job to have in school", that's what I was hoping for. I want to help in a capacity that I can, gain some experience, and lower the anxiety level when I do begin clinicals during school.

Any other info would be MUCH appreciated! Good *luck* miiszkim0711, I hope you recieve a position, and congradulations on your CNA!

Great nursing school. You will learn a lot at AACC. Get ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good to hear that reisling!! I have been amazes at the background of my professors, it's a great school, good class/professor ratio.

Did you attend AACC?

Thank you!!

I attended AACC :) I had a overall good experience with most of my professors, just a couple of bad ones in the Chem dept. but that's a totally different story lol. The nursing program is very top-notch but I can't get in since I'm not a county resident :( Good luck though, I'm sure you'll do well !

No, I did not attend that school. I work with the students when they do their rotation through ICU. They are on the ball compared to the idiots at PGCC.

Really? I was thinking of attending PG since I do live in the county, but idk I'm leery about it. Were the students just not competent or were they just plain rude?

Reisling, can you expand on observations you've made as you've watched nursing students? That is, what is it you see in a student, that makes you think, "ah, she/he will make a good nurse"? Is it enthusiasm, sharpness, the ones that "instantlly catch on to a procedure" or the ones that perservere till they get it? Or is it something that can't quite be defined?

Any thoughts appreciated!
