Attention new grads may 2009

U.S.A. Maryland

Is anyone having any luck so far with hospitals in Maryland? All of the hospitals that I have talked to have told me that they are not looking at new grad applications until April. Is anyone else hearing the same thing? This seems so late to me!!!

Which hospitals have told you they're not posting new grad jobs until April? I saw on the Baltimore Washington Medical Center website that they won't be posting theirs until April or May. But when I spoke with recruiters at Sinai and UMMC, they told me that they've filled all of their new grad spots already. And Hopkins recruiters don't ever pick up the phone, so I have no idea there.

I am moving to Baltimore in May after I graduate from an accelerated BSN program at a Big Ten university, and I won't be able to buy a house (which is what I hope to do) without having a job offer in hand. This is really frustrating. The reason I am moving there is because my ex just landed a post-doc at JHU. We've agreed to live in the same city until our son (who is 4) leaves home. Baltimore is a nice place, so I don't mind picking up my life here and moving out there. But I need to land a job first!

I am seriously considering just flying out there next week and walking into some hospitals to ask about new grad jobs, since the recruiters have been no help. I have filled out *lots* of applications online, but I think that because I live so far away, my application is not even getting looked at.

I am graduating with honors (3.75), I work as a CNA, and I have lots of real-world experience and perspective from my previous career (academia---I have a doctorate). And I will be doing my senior preceptorship over the next five weeks in the busiest E.D. in the state. (E.D. is where I hope to work.) I had been told that doing an E.D. preceptorship can help get applicants over the hurdle of not having any previous E.D. experience. (That's why I worked so hard to get one of only two spots for preceptorships in that E.D.)

If anybody has any hints or advice, I would sure appreciate hearing it! I feel powerless and desperate from so far away.

Well I have talked to Johns Hopkins Bayview, Harbor Hospital, St. Josephs, Franklin Square....and all of them have said they arn't looking at May grads until April, because they don't know what they can hire. It is frustraiting because most of my classmates applying to PA hospitals have their jobs lined up already, and I haven't heard anything yet.

I know what you mean . . . every single one of my 28 classmates (in the accelerated program) already knows exactly where they'll be working.

Well, I'm relieved to hear that those hospitals you listed will possibly be hiring. I know that the Laurel Regional Hospital down in Laurel is also hiring. Do you think that would be a reasonable commute from Baltimore? I plan to live in the city, in the Lauraville area.

Probably, I actually live on the PA/MD line, so i would be commuting from PA, its about 30 minutes for me to get to baltimore, but its worth it because PA is so much cheaper to live. Good luck!

Thanks! You, too!

Not to be nosey, but why Baltimore rather than Philly?

Johns Hopkins (main campus) is hiring...i just got a job to start in August

I can't get anyone there to pick up the phone. Do you know which units are hiring? Thanks! And congrats!

Specializes in pediatrics, oncology.

Congrats!! What unit will you be working on? I start in the PICU in May.

:yeah::yeah::yeah:

I will be working in Shock Trauma and the only reason I got the job was because of clinical scholars. I know UMMS is not hiring new grads and I'm not sure about the other hospitals.

I have heard from several people that lancaster county, in PA is hiring new grads- if you don't mind the commute.

What do you mean by clinical scholars? Possibly the program that UMMS offers? Or does JHU offer one as well?

Yes, I was talking about the clinical scholars program offered by UMMS, I am not sure if any other hospitals offer something like this.
