applying to JHU SON ABSN, any advice?

U.S.A. Maryland

Hi everyone,

I'm assembling my app. for the ABSN program, shooting for the early decision date 11/1. Any tips for applying from anyone? Esp the ppl that are already in the program.

I think the hardest thing for me on this way to nursing is writing the personal essays. :banghead: I dread having to "sell" myself on paper...I am a good writer, but always at a loss for words when it comes to some generic question...(how can you bring diversity to our program, for ex.). And if I answer, why do I want to be a nurse the same way all the other applicants do.....sigh. I'll think of something, I must, but what do you think?

Thanks for your time everyone :nurse:

Last year, there was a huge long thread on the JHU ABSN progra. Do a search for JHU, Hopkins, John Hopkins...on the forum search.

Hi Jane -

I'm obviously not going to be of much help because I am in the exact position as you! I will be applying to the ABSN (well the BSN-MS combined program) this Fall as well. Honestly, I don't have much advice because I am just a fourth year undergraduate (at the Johns Hopkins University)! But I am really excited to see what happens!

Good luck with the application! :)

Hi guys!

I applied ED to the accelerated BSN program; I, too, had a rough time with the essays (am I ever glad they're over!). Last year's thread was great; maybe we can get one going for ourselves?

Did either of you (or anyone else) decide to go Early Decision? What other programs are you looking at? What are you doing in the meantime?

Hi!

Like I mentioned in the other thread, I ended up deciding to apply Early Decision. After really thinking about it, I could not even pinpoint why I did not jump at the offer from the get-go. Anyway, I am applying to other programs "just in case". I already applied to UPenn's program (deadline was October 15th), and I am going to apply to Columbia's program in the next couple of days. In the meantime, I am just chugging along with my school work, part-time job, and extra-curricular activities (volunteer, research, etc.).

Anyway good luck!

I applied for the early decision too. Glad to have turned that in. The other schools I'm applying for arent due until mid-Feb at most. I should be looking for more to apply to in the meantime...

I hope we dont have too much overly qualified applicants to compete with. Hopkinsundergrad, when is the Coloumbia app. due?

I'm just finishing up my pre-reqs. Must take CPR sometime.

So many smilies. :barf02: I couldnt resist. I should be studying.

Columbia's application is due November 17th.

Also, I am curious to know how many Early Decision applicants they tend to get every year. Hmm, there are already four or five of us on the board which is pretty impressive! :)

I haven't taken the GREs yet, or started studying for them. I remember from somewhere that there are around 400 applicants/ year...yikes!

How did your other apps go, Hopkinsundergrad?

Oh wow! Well, we can only hope for the best! I wonder when they began calling people last year of decisions. I am assuming it will be this week or next! Considering no one has posted yet, I am assuming we are all still waiting. HEHE, oh well. I think I can wait another two weeks.

But all of the applications I wanted to complete in the fall are already sent in (Loyola - Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University). If I don't get into Hopkins, I will complete the others in the Spring (NYU, Pace, Georgetown). We'll see what happens! The applications in and of themselves were not that bad though. Hopkins had the most interesting prompts, and I thoroughly enjoyed writing those essays. Now I am just sitting around waiting to hear their say! :)

How about you? Have you applied to other schools (aside from ED to Hopkins)?

I actually liked the JHU application too. The online apps seem so impersonal..and sometimes sloppy/ unprofessional. I like that JHU had everything on paper. I was tempted to make mine all pink and perfume-y like on Legally Blonde...but only to amuse myself and get rejected.

If I get into JHU, which I really really hope for...although its a long shot, then I wont be applying anywhere else:D. I havent submitted my other apps yet (the fees add up, and I'll just wait 2 weeks-ish for this decision). I'm planning on applying to a backup in California--CSU Bakersfield (yuck), Purdue, NYU (another back up), Duke, and quite possibly others...depending on what I get into first, ha. I wonder what nursing school is like in Canada...hm. I'll probably change those schools in a few weeks- I need to do more research.

I pretty much missed all the other ED deadlines though :p. If youre interested, UCDavis also has a masters in nursing program. They just got a ton of money to start a new nursing program for 09. (I personally dont prefer the town.)

Btw, good luck!!

I was really hoping for a prompt like, "You wake up in the morning, and you step out your door, what would you like to change or see different." I could write a novel on that one.

Most of the schools ask for diversity, shrug. I just treated it like a job interview.
