Anybody Else Doing Howard CC's Accelerated RN Program Starting May 2009?

U.S.A. Maryland

Hello everybody!

I just received my acceptance letter for the Howard Community College accelerated RN program starting in May, 2009 (and running until July, 2010).

I wanted to see if there was anybody else on the local forum that has applied and/or been accepted to the program yet... I'd love to meet some fellow students before this (intense) program actually starts.

Best wishes!

Just want to wish you good luck. I'm a nursing student at HCC now... however, there is no way I could do the accerlerated (spelling) program. I'm taking reg. nursing courses and thats enough to overwhelm me. My classes are seven weeks long, an exam every 2-3 weeks. There are 2 classes in each semester. SO far I love HCC's nursing program, I'm sure you will too. Good luck, and take care.

Nursing student 19 - How have you liked clinicals? That's what scares me! Also- are the locations mostly in the Baltimore area? I'm actually in Montgomery County so I'm afraid it's gonna be a hike. Good to hear you are enjoying HCC though. I took a lot of my prerequisites there and loved it. Good luck with your program!

Silver Watch-I personally love clinicals ! We can't chose where to go to clinicals, but so far I've been blessed not to have to travel so far. I've been to clinicals in glen burnie, and baltimore city ( which is where I live now). In my class people were allowed to switch clinicals sites... however that caused too much confusion so I think that they don't allow that anymore. Getting back to clinicals: Everyone is nervous their first time going. I've work as a CNA in the hospital before and I was still a little nervous. Instructors love students who are prepared for clinicals, knowledgable, and takes initiative. Key points to remember: Never do any procedure with out your instructor being there with you, know about the drugs you are giving to your pt., if you are not sure about something don't guess... find your instructor. Lastly, smile.... because clinicals is the another step to you becoming a nurse !!!! Good luck to you.

Nursing student 19---

I've only heard great things about HCC's program - - - it good to know you're having a good experience there too. Are you in the day or evening/weekend program? I'm applying for the evening/weekend program for Fall '09 and wanted to know how often students go to clinicals.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.:nuke:

RNB440- I'm also in the evening weekend program. I honestly can't tell you how often clinicals will be... that all depends on the hospital availabilty and the instructors schedule. I happened to have clinicals E/O weekend from 7-3. Some students in my class had clinicals every week on thru and fri from 5:30-10PM. I'm praying I'll still have clinicals E/O weekend next semester but its always subject to change. I do know that clinicals will become longer as you proceed through the nursing program. I was told that clinicals may last from 7-4 on a weekend, or from 5:30P-11:30P on thursday and friday nights. Please note that I'm not in the accelerated program... so I'm not sure of their clinical times/days. But I'll be happy to answer anymore questions regarding HCC's nursing program !

nursing student 19,

Thanks for your thoughtful and insightful posts -- I (and many others on this board) appreciate all of your comments. As I'm sure you can imagine, there are many of us that are both and excited and nervous about the upcoming program!

Best wishes to you!

You ALL are welcome. I know you guys will do well. I am also nervous and excited about the upcoming semester. So far I found nursing school to be great, and challenging at the same time ! Good luck everyone, and merry christmas !

I am applying to the accelerated program and traditional. I guess I am curious if you have any more thoughts about the rigors of the accelerated option? Do the 2 programs interact much? Did you consider the accelerated option? If you had been accepted to the accelerated program and offered admission this year as opposed to having to wait a full year to begin the 2 year RN program do you think you still would choose the traditional schedule? (I am applying to both for this year but as I too am out of county I feel like it is really unlikely I will get a seated - but if I do (it would be for accelerated in May).... I was going to accept and say "yippee" and buckle down - but I have yet to really talk to anyone in the accelerated (maybe they are just huddled in a study group 24/7?) - so if you have any thoughts - I would love to hear them. (also - just any thoughts you have too on the folks in the program would be great - (do you feel like there is a lot of bonding or is it more of a independent/subtly competitive experience ?) thanks so much

you're absolutely right about the studying. we did do a lot if it. emphasis on the we. i don't know how many seats they offer now, but back then it was 24. i can honestly say that there was a lot of bonding. between clinicals (2 8 hour days/week) and study groups, and after hours skills lab, we spent a lot of time together. some clinical groups carpooled. we tried to help each other out with our issues, whether personal or with school. of course there's always gonna be that someone who tries to be the best, the "know-it-all", but remember that in the end, your ultimate goal is to pass each course and the boards.

I know this is an older thread but I'm applying to the accelerated program in May 2010 and I just wanted to hear how your experience has been so far Psychopharmacology?

Hi I'm trying to get some info about HCC's accelerated program. I'm not a Hoco resident but I do have a previous bachelor's degree. Does that carry any weight with admissions?

Also, how intense is the program?? Do graduates usually feel prepared after graduation? or is all the infor just crammed ?

Hi there! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you!

It's hard to believe, but I'm almost halfway through the accelerated program already! I absolutely love it so far, though I have to admit that it's definitely challenging. As a nursing student (and as a nurse), you've got to be willing to be flexible and dedicated, and this program certainly requires both. The faculty have been helpful and the clinical sites that I've been to have been very receptive to students.

If there are any other questions I can answer, please feel free to ask. Best of luck!
