White male in nursing, any scholarship options I need help BAD!!

Nursing Students Male Students

Hello everyone,

I am new to the site and would like to start out by saying hello. I am a 31 yo white male doing a accelerated CD2 program at wayne state university. I was so happy to get into the program. the program is difficult, but I must say the school is great and they have it set up very well. The experiences are great and the culture of Detroit brings very many different views.

When starting the program I was assuming it would be 27,000 for 16 months. come to find out after i scheduled It is going to be more like 35,000. I dont know what I am going to do. I NEED SOME ASSISTANCE and FAST.

I have already had to move out of my house and into a friends house. I had three rental properties which I am now loosing to the bank. Not by choice, the program consumes so much time and tenants were not paying their rent, and I simply could not work at all in this program. So over all I am taking a major hit in my life to do this program.

I have had a goal to be a nurse for many years, I wish I would have done this route when I was 18. Sometimes it just takes a while to figure out what you want in life.

Our school sends out scholarship info a lot, but they are all minority based. I just feel like the cards are stacked against me. I really need any assistance I can get. I dont know how I am going to pay for summer semester or fall. I literally have a difficult time putting gas in my car. I NEED HELP. Does anyone know any options? i have applied for so many scholarship.

Thanks,

Kevin Ellis

Tracking down scholarships for male nurses is a waste of time and really discouraging. The only "free" money I've received for school is through my employer. I think I was the only person who knew about and applied for some dinky scholarship, but they also somehow saw fit to give me a few grand for some other scholarship I didn't even know about. Other than that, I'll be swimming in "good debt" indefinitely, and I'm still only in the process of getting my BSN. Good luck.

I am a white male as well. You are the wrong color and gender for a scholarship. White males get the shaft. Good luck anyhow. Let us know if you get some help.

Wow, just wow. I am a white male and had no issue's getting others to not only pay for my tuition and fee's but was also able to get enough money to reach my total cost of attendance (so much money that I am now ineligible to recieve student loans, it was a shock to get the email from my school that informed me that I was no longer able to accept my student loan offer).

Sure there aren't many scholarships just for white male nursing students, but thats ok. There are tons of scholarships out there that are gender and race neutral, they usually are merit based and require a stellar GPA, vol work and a compelling essay.

Sorry that you feel like you are getting the shaft because there aren't scholarships earmarked for your exact demographic, but by no means are white males getting the shaft.

i checked out quite a few scholarships when i started the nursing school thing, and found little that offered anymore than 2 or 3 scholarships for a entire region per yr. with those type of odds of course i didnt get the cash...so the army i went.

White males are going to get shafted for getting anything for free.

I had a 15 yo pt in Peds one day tell his mother he was going to get a scholarship for college just because he was black. Sad.

So, it's true just because the 15 y/o said so?

1. If he gets a scholarship, it'll be because Momma made him work his butt off. Even if a scholarship is geared towards those disadvantaged, it still has to be earned.

or......

2. In about 2 years, this now 17 years old will get a very rude awakening when the projected costs for college come in.

I had a 17 y/o convinced that his lower middle class family would buy him a new Cadillac for HS graduation. Also had a 40 something schizophrenic refuse to believe that he couldn't qualify to buy a house with his sustenance level SSI payments. Guess which two of the two dreams never came true?

Just dreamin' about it ain't enough.

I say it because white males don't get anything unless it's strictly academic based. You want to compare the amount of scholarships awarded to white males with the "disadvantaged" and minorities?

Back before everything was available online, I went to the financial aid office to look at some huge book to look at anything I might qualify for. You wanna take a guess what percentage of them were available to white males?

I'm fairly certain crying over white males not getting free money for college might indicate a need to revisit a history book or two. I know you're "just sayin" or something like that, but sounds like you need to step outside of your immediate needs and get a little perspective. The sentence fragment "just because he was black" may not have always been used to lament the tragedy of minority Peds patients getting scholarships instead of white guys. Also, you shouldn't have punched that kid and his mother in the face. That was wrong.

i've noticed that some of the local hospitals offer "scholarships" annually that provide modest to moderate assistance (typically 500-2000$/year) in exchange for signing non-compete agreements (typically at least 1 year) and agreeing to work at particular facilities (typically 1-2 years) after graduating often they carry non-fullfillment clauses causing repayment if you fail out, and many of the facilities that offer these "scholarships" tend to pay below-average wages as a result of your obligations to work there, but it's always an option.... and sometimes it's a good option as it does provide a job when you graduate, which can be challenging ad stressful as the 0 experience nurse who has some loans and bills to pay (or mouths to feed)

I don't excuse anything that happened decades ago. However, equality over the past 50 years, hasn't really meant equal rights, but special rights. It's not like I haven't faced reverse discrimination in the workforce and was pretty much laughed at over the entire notion of a case when I clearly outperformed my co-workers. But when you're working in an establishment where black employees are writing racial stuff in bathrooms to make it look like they're being subjected to a hostile work environment in order to sue the company, they get away with everything and it's the white guys that get sent packing.

Fixed that first sentence for you.

In other words, your complaining about experiencing a small degree of the discrimination that others have faced for centuries? :coollook:
