Repeating 1st semester of nursing school:(

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

Hi, everyone has had poor experiences with instructors, good and bad. It takes all kinds.

Why do CI's think they can act this way with no recourse??? I had one do something similar to me, but I stood up to her and she backed down. It's unreal that they think just because they have "students" that they can be prima donnas and berate us. I truly feel sorry for these men-haters. I feel CI's should treat us as future colleagues instead of idiots they must lead thru the desert..... It's truly bizaare.

anyway, enough ranting.. I feel your pain OP.

Richard

It's a tough situation. If the grade's already posted, it's up to the professor to change the grade. The dean can go speak with her, however, it is still up to the professor. Even if the dean threatens to fire her, or does fire her, the dean can't change the grade. No one in the school can change it other than the original professor. With that said, I still think you should go to the dean and explain what happened. If for nothing else, to make sure this professor can't do it another poor soul.

Being that you have other instructors willing to speak on your behalf, I would consult with a lawyer concerning this. I think you have a sexual harrassment suit.

It's so hard to get into nursing school here in CA, that I'm afraid of doing anything which might affect my chances of getting back in (even naming the school).

CrimsonKing - when I spoke with the dean, she said she needed to hear from others on the clinical rotation before taking any action. And when 7 of the other 9 students on my rotation tried to speak to the dean, she refused to see them. Bottom line: she didn't want to hear anything which might've forced her to take action against this instructor. The school has lost three instructors this year, and it's very hard to replace them at the wages they offer. So I can understand the dean not wanting to lose another instructor. Even a crazy one. I'm just hoping that there's been enough exposure from this incident, that the instructor will have a more difficult time justifying this type of behavior in the future.

richardjboro1 - Most of the other faculty treated us professionally, and at times even pleasantly, like future colleagues. But now I understand the old saying "Nurses Eat their Young."

I'm so sorry to hear about your horrible experience. Some people like to watch others squirm, it's a control issue, I believe. Just know this isn't personal, just someone trying to throw their weight around, and do your very best. Please don't get discouraged, just look toward the light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I feel bad for you! I had a similar experience with a 3rd semester instructor who was a witch. She hated men, in fact she treated all the men like crap. She was really rough and very impatient, I was moved to a different clinical group, after my own asking, and did end up failing the semester (3rd). I just graduated and she didn't so much as smile at me or congratulate me.

Hang in there, get back in the middle of the boat and do your best. I know exactly how you are feeling right now.

Just wanted to say I love your avatar. So sweet. Good luck in your nursing career!

hang in their...I have also felt the subtle discrimination of nursing instructors against men. My experience has been that it is best to overprepare for med questions just because of this type of issue. For the record most instructors have been very supportive but I do think that the way to survive is to fly below the radar and ask questions whenever you have a question. Best of luck!
