Looking for Scholarship Advice

Hello everyone!

I'm in my first year of my schools nursing program. I'm having a hard time balancing work and school. I got a good chunk of money from my normal financial aid, but sadly I couldn't get any secondary loans out so I'm still working 30+ hours a week. This is really hurting me and only a few weeks into the program I'm having a hard time keeping up. I was wondering if anyone else who has had similar experiences might be able to help me out with some advice on scholarships/grants or what I should try. I've already talked to my financial aid office and they were a dead end.

Google around looking for scholarships, add in search terms that are relevant to you. Ask everybody you know to keep an eye out (sometimes an article in the newspaper will tell about a scholarship). Search your local community college financial aide board, website.

Try to local Elk's Lodge, Soroptomists, and other community organizations (many have scholarships). Check out local businesses. There are many scholarship databases, you just have to browse around.

Start a database/calendar regarding scholarships you do find that have already passed, so you be prepared for next year. And periodically check back at your colleges financial aide office. At my school, different scholarships came out at different times of the year...also ask again about any private scholarships. Keep asking/heck make friends or get a work study job in financial aide office so you can learn the ropes.

Also, research all the nursing organizations, esp the ones you are interested in. Most have a student rate. Once you are a member you can apply for their scholarships. And keep a copy of all your nursing entrance essays. They are great to recycle for scholarship essays. Looking for financial aid is almost a full time job in itself. Keep your eyes and ears open. I hope you find some great ones!

Check out the federal Nurse Corps scholarship. It's essentially a full ride scholarship and you may qualify for a $1200/month stipend too. You do have a contractual obligation after school is finished so it doesn't come without strings attached.
