How to tell if nursing is for me?

Hey guys,

I a 42 year old male. I have been a computer programmer for the last 20 years. I am thinking of doing something completely different for the next 20. I have narrowed down my field of interest, and nursing is in the top two. I like the idea of helping people, more social interaction, and the technical aspect of the job. Do you think that taking a feeler course, or volunteering at a hospital would give me a better feel for what the job entails and what the work environment might be like?

I appreciate any advice!

3. Consider what kind of graduate degree you could get in that same time in your current field. Example, if it will take you 3 years to get an Associates Nursing degree, what could you do in that same 3 years in your current field?

Female here....IT for the past 19 yrs. E.E. degree.....and term 3 NS.

For those unknowing about IT, getting a masters isn't going to help the situation. As long as the job can be done outside the country, your job is at risk...manager or developer.

One thing I am looking forward to is getting out of a cubicle farm!

I have loved clinicals so far....and BTW, the oldest in my class is a guy -> airline pilot....who is a couple of weeks older than me.

Thank you! The only reason I can think of to get a Masters would be so I could teach at a community college. I would enjoy that. I have no desire to progress further in this field otherwise.

If you like the be involved with patients and with medical care. Nursing should be for you. I chose this path instead of becoming a pharmacist...due to nature of the job....(keep you on your toes)
