LPN to RN how long can you wait?

How long are your credits good for if you are an LPN and want to become an RN. Also, what if you have a degree with the RN prerequisites, does that secure the credits or does it not make a difference? Im a little confused if you took the prereq such and such a year but finished (graduated or whatever)later, do the base the time on when you took the class or when you finished school. I hope this isnt confusing three questions. Please help. Im a new LPN and want to be an RN but am going to work first. I dont want to have to take any classes over.

Most of the programs that I'm familiar with require that the A&P and Microbiology classes were completed recently (within 5 years or 10 years, depending upon program), some others also require that the other science classes be recent. Other general education type classes generally can be any age. You should look into the schools in your area that you might wish to attend.

What if you have a degree with those classes does that same rule apply? I guess Ill need to go, check.

At the schools I'm familiar with it doesn't matter whether or not the courses were part of a degree. There often can be exceptions made, however, so be sure to talk to people at the schools that you're interested in to see what their policies are. One of the biggest inconveniences of nursing education is that various programs have very different prerequisites, so try to find the place that will best meet your needs.

Gosh, I've been an LPN for 20 years, and I CLEPPED, was awarded credit by portfolio for two others, and tested out of PEDS and OB. Penn State wasn't concerned about how long I've been out of school, as long as I know what I'm doing!

I thought the whole point of getting a degree was so that the classes do not expire....Otherwise a whole bunch of people would have to take the same things over and over again.....

What is 'awarded credit by portfolio'...

Sorry for not explaining. Credit by portfolio just meant that I'd been an LPN for more than 5 years and had worked at least 1000 hours/year during that time. If it had been less than 5 years, I would have been awarded the credits from classes at my from my prior learning institution, but since I'm an "older" LPN, our school didn't give credits...just a diploma at the end. Hope this helsp!
