Published

My name is Lori.

I just passed the LPN entrance exam . And have been accepted into the program. 30 out of 150 applicants. Any advise for new nursing students? Anything I should study before starting the program? :uhoh21: Any advise would be great.

Thanks

Hello, congrats to you, I am a part time student and just finishing up my 1st year, My biggest advice to you as others have stated get organized, stay on top of everything. My 1st week was so overwhelming I asked my self why am I doing this???????I have had a great 1st year.....I enjoy all my instructors and repect them a great deal. I have met some really great people. Never be afraid to ask questions even if you think they are silly. Oh and yes AVOID THE DRAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!I do not know your age or life status...but remember why you are there....Bettering your family, just starting out, supporting a single parent household whatever it is....Stay focused you will be stressed enough and do not need the added stress of drama........Good luck.

Speaking from experience, stay on top of your A&P. It would be a good idea to memorize the Metric, Apocathery, and House hold conversions. With out knowing the conversions, you cannot doth drug calculations! Find the easiest way for you to do the drug calculations because there's so many ways. There "D" over "H", ratio and proportion, moving the decimal three spaces to the left or right, and so on.

I am making a move back home to Kansas to start nursing school. I really look forward to it because I feel it is my destiny to become a nurse and then to excell from there. Sometimes when things don't work out how we originally plan,it can be devistating. In Kansas, I'll be able attend an 11 month program versus an 18 month program here in CA. For those who don't know, the state of Kansas is looking those who want to go into nursing. They don't have enough people going into nursing and other aspects of the medical field versus in CA, there are simply not enough programs to keep up with the demand of those interested in nursing. Kansas has extra money just for nursing students.

:chuckle

I just enrolled in the September Program -=) aren't you sooo excited and very nervous? I just went to my orientation and reserved my seat in the class......Do you have to read the math for meds book prior to your start date? Do you have any children? I have 2 So I am sooo scared but Im gonna try my hardest -=) Good Luck to you as well

Stay on top of your A&P, learn the metric system, apocathery system and also house hold. You need to these systems like it was your new first name. You cannot do the drug calculation with out knowing these.

Hi QUEENCA,

Thanks so much, I have been trying exactly what you suggested, I think I am going to have my hardest time with A&P, is there a book out there that you know of that can help me get a little head start over the Summer so I will not have to struggle so much when it is time? and any special methods, you suggest, to memorize all this, EX: the bones and so forth.

Anyones suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! I am excited, BUT>>>>>> Really nervous at the same time!!

Show me the money!!!!! I am in Kansas City and have not heard of this--- would love to know more- I have been enrolled at ATS in KCK, but had to drop my class date.

The wait was no more than three months at the time ( a year ago). It was not an expensive program as it was run by the state. Please either pm me or reply to share the wealth!!!! Thanks so much---- Dawn

hi natasha and the others. this is also my first year to start the lpn program. i go on july 18th for orientation :) i am really looking forward to it. i will keep you all posted

I will be honest with ya, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had so many people say, oh it is awful, are you sure you really want to do this, how are you going to do this with 4 kids, etc....

I was determined...this is what I have always wanted to do...nobody knows me like my parents know me and they knew I could do it.

But the one thing that really really prepared me was that orientation, those instructors did not hold back and they were very honest. It is intimidating as heck walking into that room, but hang in there, it is every bit worth it. 3 more months to go and I am D. O. N. E.!!!!!

congrats to nurseinthemaking, could you give me some tips on the classroom work which lies ahead because this will be my first year starting in August. thanks so much :)

I finally recieved my Packet!!

My orientation is Aug 15th , with a starting date of Sept. 6th!!!

So anxious to get Started!!

I got my packet the day of passing my tests. My orientation is on july 18th. I am looking forward to it. I will let you know how it went. I see others talking about the math for meds. I am going online to study on it.

 Hello, everyone!

I am also starting my LPN program full-time in the fall-- August 22nd to be exact. I am also very nervous about the math-- in our first orientation meeting on 5/25, the director of the program made it very clear that if you are not a strong math student, that you should get a tutor now... and so I am going to do my best to work on math for meds all summer too... my ten y.o. daughter can't believe I am going to be studying during her "days off", but I think she also understands how important this is to me, and how much I want to do it successfully! Good luck everyone!

Congrats to all that are starting school!!! I just graduated last December at age 42. I was in an accelerated program that took 10 months, so the pace was pretty fast. With three kids still at home it was a challange. BUT if I can do it, so can you.

My best piece of advice is to take each day as it comes. I woke up each day and said "I'm getting through this day and will worry about tomorrow, tomorrow". Pretty soon the end was there and I was a nurse. I didn't have to work, but many people in my class did have too. They did just fine. But it is better if you don't have too.

I agree too - stay out of the drama. It was amazing what played out during school. We started with 42 and ended up with 29. Most left due to drama with the teacher...only one student left due to academics. Our teacher was hired for our 2nd half of the program and she was "different" to say the least. She did know her stuff and that's all I cared about. Some felt it necessary to challenge her ways and they lost in the long run....some as late as a few weeks before school. We also had drama between students.

Another good thing to do is to tape your lecture notes. Most teachers will not let you record them, but you can record yourself reading all the notes you took. I used to listen to them on my drive to school. Really helped cement the facts.

Keep us posted!

Someone mentioned, There "D" over "H",

Can someone explain to me or send me some examples of this?

Does anyone have different examples of the math?
