Dropping Out of the LVN Program

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Hi, this is my second semester in the LVN program. I have a new clinical instructor and hospital this semester. She is horrible and doesn't teach us any of the things we are supposed to do. She will tell you to shut up or stop asking questions.Everyone is petrified of her. She told us this week that we are supposed to take our patients and do everything for them except pushes. We haven't been trained for anything except by a book that we studied ourselves. I am the only new student as the other 8 were there last semester. I don't know how to work the pda or the in and outs like the others but she could care less about me. I don't sleep the night before clinicals because I dread it so much. I just wrote to the head of the department and told her I am out. Everyone says we are like lambs being lead to the slaughter. It is a very disorganized program. I can't believe it is such a mess. I am sad because I really loved being a nursing student . I am a retired teacher so I do not have to put up with it like the others though.

Thally-- Thats terrible. What is involved in the exit exam is it like the nclex??? And if so I used the Saunders Book...

Reading this thread makes me appreciate my instructors very much. They give us alot of homework and I get tired of it sometimes, but they are very helpful and constantly encourage us. When we are at clinicals, they encourage us to get all the experience we can. When an opportunity arises for us to do a skill, we page them and they come to supervise us while we perform the skill. They always go over it with us before we go into the patient's room, and they encourage us and tell us how well we did. If we make a mistake they tell us it's okay because we are learning. I wish everyone could have instructor's like mine, I learn so much from them at clinicals. They work with us so much, when we took our state assessment test a few weeks ago, our entire class was above the national average.

I hope you don't drop out of nursing school. You have made it this far. Please don't let bad instructors ruin it for you.

i too had wonderful instructors. They loved teaching new nurses. They let us take advantage of every oppurtunity in clinicals. When our careplans were reviewed they went over with each one individually on how to improve it and what they were looking for. At night when we did them before going to clinicals, if we were stumped on a Nursing Dx, all we had to do was call them (at a decent hour of course) and they would walk us through the scenario so that we could actually figure the problem out ourselves. Our school has had a 100% pass rate on the nclex for the last few years. That speaks volumes as to the type of instructors we had. I wish you all had had my instructors. It made nursing school fun. Good luck at what ever you decide to do.

Ok I remember this test they were talking about it right about the time I was graduating... Thank god I didnt have to do it. Sorry to those who did but I guess its not such a bad thing I mean it helps you prepare for the NCLEX, Right? We took two proctored exams before graduating we needed 90% or better and I got a 96% so that must be sort of the same as this HESI. If I can help please let me know... I just did the NCLEX on Feb 15th.. and passed (Thank God):balloons: Were here for you:nurse:

I'm sorry that you dropped out. And for those of you that had horrible instructors. Just remember for those of you in clinical, if your instructor isn't helping you, you are working under THEIR license. Maybe a slight reminder of that fact to them might help. Good luck to all!

I sent in my reason to all instructors and to the one in charge. My instructor, so I have been told by my girlfriend still in the clinical site, has been much better. I doubt if I helped at all but maybe. Today I start school near a jr. college down the street in the ECG program. I don't need but one course and then clinicals. So long for now and good luck.
