what is the title of your occupation?

lpn/nursing supervisor

what aspects of your occupation most appeal to you?

i enjoy working with the elderly and helping them along in their lives whether they are there for rehab and then we get them home or we help them along in the final days of their lives. not only are we the medical staff but to many we become family

what are your major duties and responsibilities? what do you do in a typical day?

i supervise cnas, pass meds, give insulins, take orders from doctors, carry out orders, assist with care plans, manage iv therapy if any that day, give breathing tx's, wound treatments and these are just among many.

what are the physical and psychological demands?

physical this job can be very taxing, there is alot of walking, bending, pushing heavy med carts occasional lifting. psychologically...well i'm in charge of 20 some odd residents, some with trachs, some with feeding tubes, some residents that are ill sometimes gravely. having to remember all their needs, and meds can be very stressful. i also have many other staff members demanding my time and attention.

what are the benefits of your occupation?

when a resident says thank you, or tells you how much they will miss you when you are off. to be present at one of the most precious times of someone's life...their death...this to me is a high honor. to be able to keep them comfortable and not alone is very fulfilling.

what are the entry-level requirements into this occupation?

i found it helped me to be a cna before working here, but it isn't a prerequisite. in my particular position must be a licensed or registered nurse. i find experience isn't necessary but can be helpful.

does this occupation offer you the opportunity to acquire additional skills that will allow you to advance in that organization?

oh yes, we are expected to attend meetings where information is given and taught.

what pay range and benefits (insurance, vacations and any fringe benefits) can you expect?

in my area lpn's make anywhere from $15-17 and hour, this is in ltc. i receive vacations based on the criteria of the facility i work at and i also pay a portion of my insurance and the facility pays the rest. i have optical, dental and medical insurance. i even have a disability insurance.

what areas of the country offer the best employment outlook in your occupation?

i understand florida has a big need for nurses, but i"m sure they are needed all over.

what, if anything, did you give up in order to pursue your occupation? was it worth it?

i had to give up working to pursue my lpn, but was worth it in the end. i could have worked but with the schedule of school and my 3 young children at the time it was more important for me to leave my job at that time. now i give up having all holidays off, and i give up everyother weekend, but that is what is expected in my job field. i also feel that you could look at our residents (elderly), they have had to give up their freedom, their homes and in some case their families, so my minor "give ups" were nothing in comparison.

what kind of lifestyle might your occupation give you?

it allows me to have better things, and to not depend on the state, i am free of that.

what are some things you might dislike about your occupation?

stress, giving up my time some days.

are there any current changes in technology that might impat your occupation?

there is always changes and most of which are very helpful to me in my job.

the independence and getting to know the residents

what are your major duties and responsibilities? what do you do in a typical day?

i oversee all mds assessments, schedule assessments, write care plans, update adl's, review nurse's notes, lead care conference and host of other things.

what are the physical and psychological demands? not a whole lot of physical demands, but it is very stressful, sometimes i feel like a babysitter for my other team members

for mds, you need to be well versed in the mds process, medicare and medicaid regulations, time mangement, your assessment skill need to be top notch, you also have to be good at communicating with staff and families. you have to be able to look at the past, present and future all at the same time

does this occupation offer you the opportunity to acquire additional skills that will allow you to advance in that organization? yes. this is a great stepping stone for many positions within, it can lead to don if you persue your rn

what pay range and benefits (insurance, vacations and any fringe benefits) can you expect?

mds nurses are the backbone of reimbursement in ltc, most owners what the best so they can increase their reimbursement rates, this means that pay is good and a lot of times, great! most get the same benefits as everyone alsewhat areas of the country offer the best employment outlook in your occupation?

i really didn'y give up anything but time, and it is worth it

what kind of lifestyle might your occupation give you?

m-f office hours and easier to get off for md appts etc

what are some things you might dislike about your occupation? sometimes the stress gets the best of me, but everyone goes through that. are there any current changes in technology that might impat your occupation?

not really, it is already computer based, so i don't see that changing anytime soon-------------------------------------------------------------

Woot! Thanks so much for answering the questions Cameron and Jaimemds! I really appreciate this help for my class! I will take in your answers and compare with the other students in the class. We are all in this class to become CNA's and then LVN's (we live in CA)

I awoke at 4am because I had to get up extra early to go register for the CNA class. You have to have it to get into this particular program to become a LVN. We are all so excited to be on our way to becoming nurses!
