3rd shift nursing as a new nurse with no experience

Nurses LPN/LVN

Bad idea?

I am a new LPN, I just passed my NCLEX and got my license on Wednesday! I had an interview at a LTC facility and was told they only have 1st shift part time and 3rd shift full time.

I really need to be working full time. However I am terrified of the idea 3rd shift nursing. Not really sure why but I am super scared lol.

Is this a bad idea for a new nurse with no CNA or health care experience to take a 3rd shift nursing job?

I graduated in August and started 2 weeks later on night shift. I LOVE it! It is so laid back I feel like I can really learn the position and all that is expected of me. Plus no big shots and families to deal with. That sounds mean but Im still a newbie I am not ready to answer one hundred questions I dont know the answers to yet.

I was a new nurse, still am, started my first nursing job on 3rd shift at nursing home. I was barely out of training when I was placed on day shift for a few weeks and let me tell you, day shift was wildly different than nights. The whole atmosphere was different. Med pass was way heavier, so many more people to deal with including staff, and although the time flew by, I felt like I had been in a tornado after leaving work, everyday. Night shift is the only shift I would care to work in a LTC facility. I think you will be fine with it. In fact, I have talked to more day shift nurses in LTC who would like to switch to 3rd rather than vice versa.

I guess it would depend on where you work. Here, each night nurse is responsible for 41 patients on the unit by themselves. The senior nurse is the supervisor but because she is also the floor nurse she doesn't have a lot of time to do the supervising part. The other nurses are usually busy too. I was very glad I had the 7-3 eexperience before moving to nights.

I think it's the best shift for a new nurse, you can take your time and there are still staff on if you have any questions, usually much more laid back. Esp. At a SNF

I'm a newly hired LPN as well and working in assisted living (sort of). For a month I did night shifts it was great and less chaotic. Night shift u have more time to study the residents charts and whatnot. I didn't like day shifts because there's so much things to do and also for the evening shift.

i have trouble staying up all night :(
