SELU vs Nicholls State

U.S.A. Louisiana

Published

Hi..I'm new to this so please bare with me.

Im 36 (in 8 days) and in the middle of a career change. I already have a BS in biology and now pursuing a BSN. I have all pre-req for Nicholls State and only need 3 for SELU. Do anyone know who has the better nursing program and why? I will be applying to both programs in a couple of weeks.

My understanding is SELU is one of the best in the southeast US. I had to transfer to a different school because I didn't have the GPA to get in. At the time I was applying I had a 3.24 (2003). I was number 50 on the wait list. The cut off that semester was around a 3.3. If you have the GPA and can get in it is one of the best. I tell most young people (high schoolers) talking about going to nursing school, that if they want to go to the best school in Louisiana go to SELU, but plan on having a 3.5 to get in by the time they are applying.

There is a downside to this though. The teachers know they are the best. If you flunk out it is your problem not theirs. Teachers seem to care a lot less about helping the students and they have a high number that don't get through the program. This is true at most nursing schools though. But I know of many other schools, where the teachers seem to care more about the students.

hi linnywho....

thanks for the info. i guess i have to decide what's more important...school status or teacher's support. i'm single and have only have 1 daughter who will be a senior this school year so i won't have all of the family demands others have. sooooo it looks like it'll be selu if accepted. thanks again!!

I am an accelerated grad from SELU's Nursing program. I had a prior B.S. in Biology.

I fully recommend this school. As a non-traditional student, teachers treat you with more respect (for the most part). Sure, some of them have a bad attitude, but that is anywhere...

If you have any specific questions about the program, I graduated in August 07, so I still have a lot of it in my head!!!

Best of luck!

It's my 1st sem in Selu-SON, regular program and so far thanks to Gustav, only about 2 weeks in school. Can't say much about the accelerated program and perhaps it's still too early to say about the teachers BUT so far, I really like my teachers. They seem to be genuine in their concern and help. They have been very approachable and have been open to a lot of "newbie" questions. Of course it's your problem if you flunk out. However, they are making sure that you don't, they have been tremendously encouraging. As for GPA, I figure one has to enter SELU SON with guns loaded, It's amazing how much we are expected to have known the prereqs well and just jump to the next level. There is none of that annoying review of the past semester's course work which normally took up a month.
