LSUHSC CARE Program Information

U.S.A. Louisiana

Published

Hi. I am applying for entry to LSU's CARE program for my accelerated BSN degree in August 2008. I am just getting ready to send my application off, and was wondering if anyone here has done this program, or is currently enrolled in it.

Mainly, I'm curious about the admissions standards. I have always been a very good student, and maintained above a 3.5 in college. I also have an advanced professional degree in another field. I am hoping these things will make me an attractive candidate for the school. I am curious how competitve the program is, especially for someone who is not a Louisiana resident.

Also, I'm wondering what the program is like. I know that it's got to be pretty intense if it wraps up all the nursing education into 18 months. What is a typical schedule like? How many hours a day and things like that?

I'm really excited about this opportunity, and looking forward to reading any responses here. Also, if anyone is currently applying as well, I'd love to connect with you so we can bite our nails together.

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone out there has applied to the 2009 Fall Care program at LSUHSC?

I recently applied and I am now playing the anxious waiting game to see if I got in! From what I read on here it looks like I could be waiting for sometime!

Anyway, I also wanted to see if any past graduates are current students in the CARE program can give me any advice?? I have a 2 year old daughter, is the program do-able with young children? I understand the face pace, I graduated from LSUHSC in Ophthalmic Medical technology and the program was pretty demanding.. with clinicals and classes at the same time. I'm just worried now that I have a child, and I'm sure there are many others like myself with a family... I'm just looking for a little advice on how you made it through!

I'd love to hear from anyone with advice or anyone who has applied along with me!!

Thank you!:D

I sent my packet in about 4 weeks ago! Right now it's the waiting game to see if we get picked to interview and after that is the wait till MAY to know if we're in! AAARRRGGGHHH!!

I've already been accepted to Charity but CARE is my #1 choice by far! I'm at the edge of my seat everyday!

I don't have any children but we haven't heard from recent CARE people lately and that perspective would be wonderful!

Let's keep our fingers crossed! I keep saying I'll be a nurse no matter the school I go to but I really want to go to the CARE program!!!

Hey guys,

I am in the CARE VII class and we are set to graduate in May. We are going to be conducting interviews along with the faculty for new applicants in the coming weeks. I'm not completely sure of how the interviewing process will work yet, however. When I applied, I did not receive my acceptance letter until the end of May prior to my start date and I know some people didn't receive theirs until as late as the end of June.

I can tell you that yes the CARE program is very demanding and it requires you to be extremely flexible in your scheduling and other life demands. We have had a few students in my program that did not make it due to demands from children and work. It is possible, though (another student in our group has two kids in elementary school and she is making it).

We are almost over the hump and I can't tell you how both nervous and excited I am to be graduating.

I also remember the anxiety of waiting for the acceptance letter so good luck to you both. Don't hesitate to ask me any other questions.

Thanks for the information! I wish you the best of luck upon graduation!

If you don't mind answering a few more questions that would be great... can you give us a brief understanding of the hours for clinicals and classes? Is there a lot of weekend days requiried? I'm just trying to get a better understanding because if I do get choosen I will have to workout daycare and my husband's schedule accordingly.

I really apreciate your advice! Thanks again!

Wow,

so happy to hear from someone that is right along with me! :nuke:

Is the Charity program through Delgado? I really haven't looked into many other options, I actually graduated from LSUHSC in MAY 07' in their OMT program. So I really would love to get the opportunity to attend this school again!

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck too... please keep me updated if you receive any word for an interview etc. and I will do the same! Fingers crossed!!

As far as clinicals go, they are usually in 12-hour shifts during the weekdays. You will, however, depending on assignment be required to work on weekends (this is all dependent on clinical instructors). Lectures during the week can run as long as 8 hours a day. This also does not take into account other projects, (teaching projects, care plans, case studies, research papers, etc) studying and reading time required. I had to sacrifice many weekends in order to get assigned work completed.

A typical CARE program week consists of one exam, two to three half to full days of lecture and two days of 12-hour clinical. It can run less, and can sometimes run a little more.

Thank you I appreciate the insight!!

Yes, Charity is part of Delgado. It is an ASN program - 4 semesters. I have a BA in Business from a small, private college in Ohio, so I've never had a speck of medical experience! I'll keep you updated as far as what type of correspondence I might receive, but I'm sure you'll get yours sooner. The mail where I live is soooo slow. I got my Charity acceptance letter 4 days after a friend of mine did!

Hi everyone,

I also applied to the CARE program and am beyond anxious to find out about admission. I just got a phone call yesterday and have an interview next week!

Does anyone know what to expect/what kinds of questions they will be asking?

I imagine questions about grades, how will i pay for school etc.

Also, how do most students in this program pay tuition?

Any info would be appreciated....

Thanks!

Hi nomoreIT,

Congats on the interview! I too received a call for an interview, but mine is not until March 14th. I am like you anxious to know what kind of questions they will be asking. I am not sure how most people pay tuition, but I will like many I'm sure be counting on student loans and my husband!

Good luck with your interview and please let me know how it goes! I'll be sure to keep you posted on my status as well.

Take Care and please keep in contact!

Looks like we're on the right track!

I have an interview also (but I'm thinking that's part of the process now). Oh well, still excited!

I'm going to go back over things that I put on my application and re-read my goal statement and the paper we had to write for the major part of the preparation. I'm trying to make up questions like "Why LSUHSC CARE?" or something about the rigors of the program. Basically, a job interview but a "Why should we pick YOU as our student instead of the others?" Kind of deal.

I have no insight into the process, I just thought I'd share how I'm preparing for my own interview! :nuke:

I would like to share some insight on the interviews....

Over the past few CARE classess there have been many people that washed out because they could not handle the stresses of the program. The interviews are simply to give the faculty a view into your 'personality'. If you are the type that's hell bent on always making an "A" you probally would not do well in this program. Now I am not saying that no one get's A's, becuase they do, but no one has a 4.0. If you cant deal with that reality you probally will not make it through.

This program is challenging and extremly stressful at many times and if you cant let your 'hair' down and relax and blow off the small, insignificant things the stress will eat you alive.

I do not mean to be negative but I am in this program and I just wanted to share some insight on the interviews and what the purpose is. Don't go into the intervew with a 'fake' personality.... be yourself and show them who you are.
