RN program advice

U.S.A. Kentucky

Published

Hi, I'm new to this website........and already I love it!

In March I will graduate with an associate's degree for (MAA) Medical Administrative Assistant from Southwestern College in Florence, KY.

However, when I finish I would like to start an RN program (2-year) as soon as possible.

I attended the info session at Christ 2 or 3 weeks ago (starting with the very next group they will no longer be offering the full tuiton reimbursement contract).

I visited Beckfield in Florence, the admissions rep was not very knowledgable.....and I looked up their NCLEX results for 1st time test-takers for 2007 and it was only 67%

I'm trying to compare schools, but would like to get students' (or friends of students) opinions on schools in the northern ky/cincinnati area.

I've also looked a little bit into Good Sam, UC(Raymond Walters), CTC, etc.

Any advice is appreciated!

Funny you should ask. Melissa also called me today, but I was flying from Tampa to Cincinnati today and missed the call. She called me on Friday to let me know that she received my transcripts, but that she hadn't had a chance to review them yet and that she would get back to me today. Hopefully we will touch base tomorrow. Let me know when you hear something. If they like your transcripts I believe they call you in for an interview, but I am not exactly sure.

I talked to them the other day and have a meeting/interview on Mon March 16th (thats when I'll be back in the area). I might get lucky and be selected to start in April.

Well, that's good news. It looks like I will be shooting for the October class now. They weren't sure if I they were going to give me enough transfer credits and eventually they decided on "no." I am just shy of an associates degree and on the Dean's List at my current University, but I do not have 30 semester credit hours of general academics which is what they want for a transfer student. Unfortunately they took so long to decided that I missed the late registration for the ACT which I will have to retake since mine is over 10 years old. I could try to show up as an alternate for the ACT, but the classes in my area almost always fill up. So from here I will be taking the ACT in April now and them maybe I will take another English class and maybe and Intro to Psychology over at NKU over the summer. Well, good luck and I hope you make the April class.

So you have to retake your ACT even if you have the 30 credit hours? Maybe we all misunderstood each other on the phone. I told him I'm 29 and that I have 47 credit hours, etc and that seemed fine. I may be taking the rest of my gen eds at NKU this summer too then if thats the case. I know they're offering Health Care Ethics, Engl. Comp II and the 2 psychology classes from May until Aug so I might do that so I can get everythign sqyared away and retake the ACT, I guess.

Sorry if I confused you. Beckfield will accept either an ACT score of an 18 within the past 5 years, or you must have at least 30 semester credit hours of general academics made up of English, Math, Psych, Soc, and History. My problem is that I have 60 credits, but only 15 of which are made up of general academics. This is why they are making me retake the ACT. I just think that it's funny how the ACT is a test designed to show that you have the aptitude to do well in college and I am in college, on the Dean's List with a 3.85, yet I have to go back and take the ACT again. Oh well, it's policy I guess. What can you do?

gotcha. Well I decided to go back to NKU starting in May and knock out a bunch of classes (gen ed) over the summer. Most of mine are from criminal justice, which was my major so they won't cross over. Thank you for letting me know. Atleast now i can take the time to focus on that and my financial aid.

Keep in mind that you don't have to get up to 30 semester credit hours of Gen Eds if you have an ACT score within the past 5 years that has a cumulative score of an 18 or better. I am going to retake the ACT in April, then I am going to take Eng. Comp. II and an Intro to Psych class this summer at NKU.

I took the ACT my junior year, wayyy back in 97. :p so that probably won't work.

So did you talk to them again to clarify? It's misleading, because all of their literature says that they will accept college experience for entrance. Notice it doesn't say exactly what they are looking for though. I am going to be leaving my job on April 1st due to a buyout and I am hoping to start class at NKU in May. Melissa told me not to take any nursing, A & P, or math classes, because they won't transfer. She said you could take an A & P class, but beckfield would still make you test out of it. So she recommended Eng. comp II, or an Intro to Psych class in the meantime. I'm not sure if you have seen yet, but private lending firms that generally provide loans to students are drying up right now. Out of 40 something of the main vendors, only around 18 are currently offering loans due to the economy. I've got my fingers crossed, because I will need a private loan for living expenses and the tuition at NKU. I can't use financial aid at NKU since I will be a transient student from my current school.

I'm going by you right now. It kind of fits better anyways, because I am moving from California on March 6th and getting into NKY the next week so it will all be rushed for me otherwise. I'm planning on taking E.Comp II, Intro to Psych, Developmental Psych (which is psy 220) and something else. I was planning on taking healthcare ethics but we'll see about that. Its just a philosophy class so I don't know what they think of that.

I hear ya on the student loans though. I have over $15000 already but thankfully thats it for me. I'm paying outright this summer and then after August I'll be using the Montgomery GI Bill so thankfully I won't have to deal with financial aid anymore. Good luck on yours! I hope you can get it.

Finally!

I have been playing phone tag with Melissa Joos for a few days now, and today we FINALLY caught up with each other. I had just left my extern site for the day when she called. She told me that I qualified for the program (she received my transcripts a couple weeks ago), and . asked me to come in for a meeting/interview right then........so I did, and it went great.

So now I have to write some sort of essay tonight and email it to her before the end of the day tomorrow because the committee is meeting on Wednesday.

I hope it all goes smoothly! I'd love to start in April!

I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but I'm soooo excited!!!
