Anyone currently working for SHPS or Humana?

I am interested in applying for one of their jobs and would like some general info on the types of positions they have, what the company environment is like, career-tracks, etc. I don't think bed-side nursing is ever going to be for me and I'm researching other areas I can pursue as a career utilizing my nursing knowledge. I am also considering Home Health, MRDD, but am really leaning toward something totally away from patient care.

I know from previous postings on allnurses that SHPS has work at home jobs and some are 4 days per week.

My other concern is that if I were to pursue something like this and then wanted to go back to patient care it could be very difficult. Is it common for people who work at insurance type companies to also PRN on the side just to keep their skills up and options open?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have worked for Humana (not as a nurse) in the Finance Department. If you don't think bedside nursing is for you then I think this would be a good idea. The nurses at Humana have it made in the shade! :smokin: Seriously! Humana also has positions for nurses where you can work from home. They also have awesome benefits that start the day you start, which is really nice! The environment is just like any other place where you have to work in cubicles, but if you don't mind that then it is all good.

As far as SHPS goes, I have heard that they have a high turnover, but I don't know if that is just customer service or what.

Good Luck!

I used to work for SHPS. You can work from home after 6 months with them, too. Some dept.'s do have a high turnover, and the overall environment can be very paternalistic in a physician-driven kind of way.

At any rate- I did like working for them, and I got a bit more respect from the MDs there than many of my colleagues who deserved more than what they got. I only left, because I couldn't work 40 hours while in grad school any more, and they don't do part time.

Oh- and Humana pays way more. Lots of the turnover was due to people leaving SHPS for Humana, because the pay was much better for the same job descriptions.

Tell me more! You're the only person I've come across that has worked there.

They gave me an idea of what the pay would be and I was surprised at how low it was. Are there opportunities to move up and does the pay increase as you stay there longer?

Also, what is the atmosphere like--is it pretty laid back or more corporate-like?

I know the job I applied for entails a lot of phone work, but other than that don't really know anything. I'm concerned about becoming bored pretty quickly.

The opportunities to move up are not desirable. I wouldn't do management there for a 6 fig. salary. They are 50-100% in-office.

The pay does increase nominally with time, but not as well as Humana's pay structure, from what I hear. Plus, your group works on contract with national employers (your patients are their employees). If the employer doesn't renew their contract, you are at risk for being laid off and let go.

It is a moderately laid-back corporate environment, depending on who your manager is. I was blessed with a very laid back & flexible mgr (as long as you got your work done), but there are some that are micromanagers to the nth degree there.

I didn't get bored at all. I had about 350 clients I was working with, and I really enjoyed interacting with them, and helping them to improve their outcomes. It was actually pretty rewarding work. I did feel a bit isolated working from home, but I kept Allnurses on my laptop, and socialized here between patients. ;-)

I was offered the same pay I was making at the bedside, so I was satisfied with that.

I hope this helps.

PS- what position did you apply for?

Thanks!

I applied for Retrospective Review and Utilization Management. They are the only 2 currently posted that I think I may qualify for.

Oh- you should be fine, manager-wise then. Good luck to you!

BBFRN--

Is there a way I could email you privately? I have lurked on allnurses for several years, but rarely post and don't know how to do anything other than post to the forums where anyone can read it.

I had an interview today with SHPS and the position was nothing like the job description in the posting--it's like I was interviewing for a totally different job (except I wasn't). Also, they didn't seem too receptive when I tried to inquire about other opportunities down the road so I dropped the subject quickly, but I'm trying to figure out if I should take the job, if offered, as a way to get in and eventually do the type of work I want to do.

I can give you more details privately and would love to get your feedback, if possible. It was all a bit strange.

Thanks
