Why do people go through agencies? Does it make it less stressful to find work or something?

Some work agency, because it offers more scheduling flexibilty, some because it pays better, and some because it allows one to move around and avoid workplace politics.

Is there a down side to working through an agency?

Well, if you work per diem (as opposed to working a 13 week contract), you can get canceled. That can screw up your financial & time planning. I usually recommend signing up with 2 agencies. That way, if you get canceled at one, you can try to get a shift with the other one. The thing is, they usually only have to give you 2 hrs notice for a cancelation.

    Oh. That really stinks.

Well- it is a great option if you're in school (which you are, aren't you?). I have done it while in school, and it worked out very well. Better pay, too.

One good thing, is if you show that you are reliable and willing to work hard, get along with the staff, etc. the facility will let you know ahead of time what their future needs will be. That helps some.
