Steps for new grad to work in US?

Hi! I graduated in May 2004 from a Canadian university. Sorry...I can't help you in the VISA screen area as I am an U.S. citizen so I didn't have to go through the VISA screen.

Which area of the U.S. are you interested? Any specific cities? I know California is very intestered in Canadian nurses. Many recruiting companies have lots of RN positions in Calfornia and Florida. Unless you have connections to specific hospitals...It is very difficult to get your foot in the door.

Depending on where you want to work, you may want to try recruiting companies. They have find you job opportunities and help you with the VISA screen.

I highly recommend attending job fairs. Bring many copies of your resume!!! Also don't forget to ask about orientation and benefits and relocation assistance.

From what I have heard, there are hospitals who will not even consider you because you have not schedule to write the NCLEX. There are even some who will not "talk" to you until you have your RN license.

There is a shortage of nurses out there. Both in Canada and in the U.S. Personally, I think hospitals would rather hire experienced RNs rather than new grads like us. =(

I think most places will want you to have at least one year experience.

I am graduating with BN in April and really want to move to the US to work. I've gathered great information from this site, and am studying for the NCLEX, understand that I need a Visa Screen etc., The only thing I seem to be lacking is interest from hosptials in the States. I've contacted hosptials that I am interested but have only heard back from one which stated they are not hiring new Canadian grads - but to contact them after I have one years experience??? I thought there was a nursing shortage everywhere...has anyone other new grad or potential new grad faced this response. I am surprised that all the hospitals I've contacted haven't responded. Maybe this shortage is being overplayed...Anyone else have any thoughts?

Me and DH went to the US as new grads, worked there for 8 years and then moved home. So it maybe depends on where you're trying to go. Any particular destination in mind?

Hey there, I am considering working in the U.S. as well. I live near Toronto and a few times a year there is a large nursing recruitment fair with hospitals looking to recriut Canadian RN's. Check out the website http://www.healthcareerscanada.com/

Check to see if they will be coming to your area. It is a great place to meet and talk to some of the recruiters form various hospitals and agencies.
