International Nursing Student with OPT

Hi all!:D

I am an international student currently studying in nursing and will be graduating in May 2012. :yeah: I am researching for new grad programs or RN residency programs around in California. However, I am wondering with OPT (Optional Practical Training) would I be able to get into those programs and perhaps with a pay check? :confused:

Only if the position requires all nurses in this position to have a bsn and there are no qualified us citizens or perm residents available to fill the position. So short answer is no.

yes the requirement is BSN or higher and needed 5 years of experience as well and also the opened date was last year of january and they have not received any qualified candidate yet and so i have masters degree and experience so will that make me eligible? I would appreciate if you reply me, i have a face to face interview which is 6 hours flight from where i live.

If you have 5 years of US nursing experience and a Master's Degree in Nursing ( MSN) you may have a chance. Are they paying for your airfare and interview expenses , if so they would consider you a serious candidate. Are you certified in by the American Nurses Association in Home Health ? Often times manager's positions are left unfilled since the staff make more money being being staff nurses.

Community Health Nurses depending on the job description, either have to be experts in public health issues since as reportable illness or they provide home care. Both depend on understanding public health laws or medicare. A supervisor would be oversee the most complex issues,

such as in the case of public health determining when a person's home needs to be removed from the home due to public health concerns, identifying children at risk, etc. A BSN with a Masters Degree in any other than nursing or Public Health ( MPH) would not qualify.

The ultimate judge of the hiring would be the US government who would decide where or not a person meets the qualifications and the salary is being offered at market value. I would find it very hard in this economy that a US nurse would not want the position, unless it is in a very undesirable area, which in community health means you would need the 5 years of community health experience and a MSN or MPH to serve this population.

If they are willing to fly you out and pay your expenses for the interview, they are serious about you. If they are are offering an interview at your expense ( considering the position has been unfilled for 10 months) they are not committed to hiring you. Good Luck.

With you Master's Degree in Nursing you could qualify for an advanced practice RN, but in this economy most advanced practice positions are taken by Nurses with many years experience.

Hi yes they are willing to pay my fare, and it is really remote place where no American nurses wants to go I found there is no stores like Walmart as well, sounds awkward though..

Great, when you drive (since it is in an area you will have to rent a car) there you can assess the living situation. Personally, Arizona is a place that I find a nice place to visti but not to live. I don't like the desert and the heat, to me the driving is tough with my hills and isolated areas that are unlit. My Master's prepared son had to move back home from Phoenix since he could not find any employment ( he loves AZ) that is why I am surprised to see that you found a position unless it is on an Indian reservation which is tough but rewarding work. The jobs I see posted require 5 yrs of nursing experience.If it is an Indian Health Services position, they require US citizenship.

Even if they offer a position USCIS has to approve the visa which maybe a hard sell since Community Health Nurse usually does not require 5 years experience.

Just a quick correction on this. An H1b DOES NOT require that a qualified us citizen or perm resident is hired first.

But the visa requires a specialty in an occupation. For nurses the specialty wound be something like a clinical nurse specialist, FNP, critical care nurse, etc and all require special certification with years experience as a bedside nurse before certification can be granted. A FNP can bypass that with a ELMSN program. So a regular BSN doesn't qualify unless they have certification in a specialty.

The hospital I work for asks for verification of eligibility to work in the US. A social security card is valid proof. Not disclosing the visa status up front questions the ethics and integrity of the nurse. The employee has a right to know how long they have the employee for.

Keep in mind that having OPT under your belt doesn't qualify a person for H1-B visa.

"specialty in occupation" means (in general) that the position requires a bachelor. Therefore being "just" a bedside nurse would normally not be enough to get a H1b. However, management positions would have a better chance of qualifying.

Also, look at healthcare related positions and jobs in the corporate world (e.g. outside of hospitals or clinics).

An advantage of H1b is that it DOES NOT require that the employer proofs that no other US citizen or permanent resident is qualified for the job and it DOES NOT require to hire them first.

A job description might list a lot of "job requirements, such as years of experiences and so on but you only have to convince the employer that you are the right person. The employer does not need to justify why he choose you instead of "this other applicant with 5 years experience". This is a very significant difference between H1b and a "green card" application.

I am also in the same situation. I am a BSN nursing student on F1 for now and will be graduating in May 2012. This is my second bachelor's degree. I have a bachelor's degree in Business Administration since 2005.

1) What are the job opportunities available for me for H1B sponsorship given that I have a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and also soon to have my Bachelor's degree in Nursing?

2) I am looking to obtain a job in hospitals in "not-so-hot" locations in the US example rural towns. Any hospitals or agencies you know of that can sponsor someone with my credentials?

3) I am also interested in contacting any nursing recruitment agencies that can assist. If you know of any, please let me know.

Currently, I live in Arizona but I am willing to relocate anywhere. And also can work in any speciality.

aabbccdd, I would like to ask you about my situation. What is the best way for me to contact you? I am a BSN student who is on F1 visa in Arizona. I will be graduating in May 2012. This is my second bachelor's degree. I attained my Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2005. Any advice is helpful and much needed. I am very stressed :(. Thanks!

New grads don't qualify for a H1b visa and there are plenty of new grad RNs from the US looking for work. It's not economical to waste money on sponsorship when they can pick from the surplus of locals looking for work.

Hi,

I've been reading posts on allnurses.com and it's really depressing to know that new grads don't qualify for a H1b visa.

I will be graduating with BSN in nursing in May 2012, and I'm applying for an OPT right now. I want to work in the US as long as I can, and I was wondering what will be my next steps. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.
