Anyone know of any Australian nurses working in Alberta?

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone knows of any Australian Nurses working in Alberta, who had to do the International Educated Nurses Equivalency Competency.

I have received an email today that my assessment will take one day, in the area of Obstetrics and Pediatrics, whereas I have no experience in whatsoever.

Feeling very intimidated by this and wondering if i should go ahead an make a fool out of myself. I am wondering if all provinces do this and if not maybe I should apply in BC to work?? :o

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

I'm pretty sure all the provinces are doing this type of assessment now. Most of them have enacted legislation for health care professionals that require some type of "substantively equivalent" education. Nursing education in Canada is fairly standard, with expectations that all graduates will have had education and some clinical exposure to the five major areas of medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and psychiatry. Did your education include at least some obstetrics and peds? They aren't expecting you to be an expert L&D nurse, or to have a vast knowledge base on pediatric nursing care, just the basics. It's very stressful going through that type of assessment. Prepare yourself well and you'll be fine!

Thanks JanfRN

Apparently when I get to Calgary I will be studying my butt off looking at some text books. The assessment will be in October. When it comes to reading textbooks, I get impatient and have a short attention span. So I really need to discipline myself. Any advice to keep my concentration up as it looks like I will be hovering to the library most days to study.
