Hi there everyone

Am new to this forum...I'm currently near the end stage of a permanent resident visa to Canada for which I have been accepted...I'm curious if there are any other UK nurses wanting to work in Canada in the future, or are there any there now who have had to re-educate to get themselves up to par with the canadian nurses, what have been your experiences please? I know I will have to take the SEC and the qualifying courses, as I lack hours in my training in some areas....

Any replies to this would be very welcome : )

Thankyou

I made the move and now working in Nova Scotia. Things in some cases are different but thankfully a lot of stuff is similar like blood results glucose monitoring. Some things will vary depending on the province you are living in and what the population is like example working in rural areas dealing a lot with the first nation and understanding their ways. I find here in NS the pay compared to the UK is much better and the union does a lot more in regards working conditions like collective agreements

Hello again : )

I'm really grateful to you for replying to me posts Silverdragon, as you seem to have a lot of knowledge about things, currently I'm working as an outpatients staff nurse, I've been there for 5 years now, and I also have additional 5 months experience from a surgical ward and 6 months from an A&E department. In outpatients I take bloods, do pre assessments, wound care and assist with minor operations...I hope this experience will help me wherever I may end up in Canada. As mentioned previously I have family in Vancouver BC so that is where I am looking to move, I know I will have to end up taking make up classes and the SEC before I am allowed to register..working in canada will be totally different I can imagine but its something i have had my heart set on for years and i don't want to give up my dream. I did see from a couple of your posts to others that you enjoy what you do and that you wouldnt ever return to the UK...I hope I have as much luck as you have :)

Believe me at times it has been hard however not once have I not felt at home here in Canada. Both myself and my husband have not felt home sick at all and there is really nothing from the UK we miss apart from seeing family, my mother has been out twice and understands how much we love it and we speak to his mother at least once a month.
