Hello everyone! Just wondering if anyone else has been accepted to the Spring 2010 ABSN program at Loyola :yeah:

Hello everyone! Just wondering if anyone else has been accepted to the Spring 2010 ABSN program at Loyola :yeah:

Can I ask what your overall application looked like? As far as grades and work/volunteer experience goes? I'm thinking about applying for Fall 2010, but I can't really get a sense of how competitive they are. If everyone has a prereq GPAs of 4.0, I can definitely rule myself out, but I'm curious to see what some of the accepted applicants look like. Best of luck starting the new program, I hope to be in your shoes in about 9 months:D

Hello there!

This will be my second bachelor's degree. I have one in Public Relations and Marketing, so my background is mainly in sales/customer service. The past 2 years have been spent working on pre-reqs, in which I managed a 3.8 GPA (my overall college GPA was a 3.7). Your science grades need to be up there - I know they look at this. I really don't know where the "cutoff" is for grades, but the one other gal I know that finished the ABSN program in 2008 entered with about the same pre-req GPA.

Over the summer I received a CNA license and have been working for about 3 months at a hospital. Loyola does look fondly on the experience - if you can (and haven't already), try to work in a health care environment. I don't have much, but it is something - and it exposes me to the day-in-day-out life of a med-surg nurse.

Your recommendation letters are important - as is your letter of intent. They did call me for a phone interview, during which I pretty much reiterated my letter of intent...Nursing has always been a dream of mine, I just never had the confidence to complete the science courses and such until now. It's amazing how well you can do if you really apply yourself!

Thank you for the well wishes - I appreciate it!! It's scary but exciting at the same time - please keep in touch with me, because as I delve into this program, perhaps I can give you better insight into what you can expect when you get in

By the way - what is your experience? GPA?

Yeah I've been thinking about a second degree program since I started my first degree. Kinda silly but I love my undergraduate studies (Public Health) and wouldn't trade it! My GPA right now is at a 3.64, and my prereq GPA is a 3.74. Unfortunately I expect both of those to go down by about .05, as this quarter has not been good to me at all. If I get above a 3.0 in micro (which is obviously a make it or break it mark for loyola), then it will be just above a 3.0. I'll know soon though.

I'm kind of riding on my experience in some ways.

I spent 4 months working at a township clinic in South Africa, and doing some independent 'research' on the side. I've also worked at a community clinic in my hometown full time for 3 months, volunteered in an elementary classroom, and I am an officer of a student group on campus aimed at health and social justice issues. I can speak the basics of Portuguese, hopefully I'll be conversational after next quarter. That's kinda what I got going for me as far as that goes.....

I stress the most over letters of recommendation. I'm hoping to arrange a faculty one next quarter when I'm working with an advisor, and then my manager from the bakery I work at. I wish I could get in touch with the place I worked at in S. Africa, but I've had absolutely no luck. Who did you get your letters from?

I'm only going to be applying to Loyola, as well as a university in San Juan, Puerto Rico (!!!), as well as some americorp jobs.

Post back on here after you start, I'll definitely check it! Be honest, BRUTALLY honest :D

I forgot to mention that Loyola LOVES diversity...I think that your experiences alone (not to mention your stellar GPA :D) will give you a big advantage.

Microbiology is a tough one...you'll make it though. Even if you didn't do as well in the course, I would apply anyway - explain it in your letter of recommendation. The rest of your experiences may be enough for them to overlook a grade that is not 'perfect'. But, I'll keep you posted on if I hear anything.

thanks for the insight! i assume when you said letter of recommendation, you meant letter of intent.

couple more questions for ya....do you know if it is rolling admission? when did you find out of your acceptance? and were you offered financial aid in any form?

Hey, I have recently gotten accepted to Loyola's ABSN program for spring 2011. What are your impressions of the program? Thanks in advance.

Get ready for a roller coaster ride :D

I recently submitted my completed application for Spring 2011, can I ask how long it took to receive your admissions acceptance. I have been accepted to MCPHS, but Loyola would be my first choice. Did you apply to other schools in the area? I will be coming from Seattle and am curious as to how the program is regarded.

Thanks! And Congrats!

I was planning on applying to Loyola in Chicago for Fall 2010, but my science classes were past the 5 year cut-off point by a semester.. I REALLY wanted to go there since their program is REALLY well-known and nice. I had a GPA of 3.4, but my science classes were all A's and a previous degree in Psych. I have 4 years various hospital contact and one year volunteer experience in Mother Baby and one year volunteer experience in an Equine NICU area. I had talked to the admissions office to see if they would overlook the one semester expiration of my science classes, but they said they would not. If I HAD retaken all of my science classes, they said my app would have been good enough to be accepted. Hope that helps, I am accepted to Chamberlain and I start tomorrow. I'm still excited, but sad that I had to drop my standards a little. Oh well, I really want to be a nurse.

I didn't apply to any other schools in the area. (I am from far away too). I got a response four weeks ago. Loyola's admission is on a semi-rolling basis so you may get a response earlier if you apply earlier. I have asked around and Loyola definitely has a good name. Not amazing like Harvard, but very well regarded especially in the Chicago area. You should visit the school if you have the chance.

I don't know when you will get the response for your application. Loyola admission is based on a rolling basis so it is possible to get an early response. I got my acceptance letter in a month and a half. Loyola is well regarded. It isn't a big name school like Harvard, but still pretty darn good. I am from far away as well, and Loyola was the only school I applied to in the Chicago area. Hope this helps.
