Depaul MENP fall 2012

U.S.A. Illinois

The painful wait begins. Have you applied or heard anything?

I want to do the np tract too! What area do you want to focus on? Do you know if depaul requires clinical experience to apply after going threw their menp program? I have seen some have a 2000 hour requirement. I would love to get into their dnp

I haven't looked into the requirement yet, but it would be way more beneficial to work for some amount of time in various unit before getting an NP if you go that route. Plus, then your hospital can help you pay for it. :) Same thing if you are a tech and you are going to Nursing school...

That way you can decide if you like Peds, OB/GYN, Family, etc...that's the nice thing about DePaul with getting a full experience of all the different clinical rotations. I applied to UIC as well, and I had to choose my specialty beforehand, which is a little scary because from everything I know I want to be a Perinatal Clinical Specialist, but there is always that chance that it doesn't turn out to be what I expect it to be....

Having a Master's with no work experience is questioned by some hospitals, but having a DNP with no bedside experience wouldn't make any sense. With nursing, the more experience you have, it seems the more everything makes sense in terms of theory. Even with my CNA clinicals I've learned so much by actual doing things that it makes my A & P II class easy!

true- but i have loads of health care experience already. i understand the need for the requirement it would just be nice to be able to save some time. i am shocked at how many students are now going into these programs with no health care experience at all! i don't understand how/why someone would want to invest so much time, money and effort into something that they have no understanding of. i guess the good thing is that they can pretty much take an RN degree anywhere.

i used to work as an EMT so i love the ER and trauma stuff. I have heard it is ideal to get a FNP as it is the most flexible. Cardiac is a really fun area too. i know one thing for sure, my eyes would cross if i had to be a floor nurse! i give them a lot of credit but that is just not for me. i crave the fast pace and the unexpected and i get easily board. i know for some they crave the routine.

A lot of people are wanting in on the medical field. I was a Director of Admissions for a school that offered MA and some other certificate programs for healthcare. I'm getting my CNA this semester, but I've really known I've wanted to be a nurse for a long time. My husband is a paramedic, and a lot of people in my family AND a lot of my friends are nurses at all sorts of levels; I am not surprised when people go into it with no experience.

I don't know that anyone who gets into nursing likes a routine, because it's anything but! Every day is different. The only thing about FNP is that it's pretty much all day hours, isn't it? I don't see too many FNP's at the hospital. I volunteer at Northwestern, but not on every floor obviously so maybe they're floating around there somewhere.

I think I have chewed my fingers to the stubbs with nerves!Anyone hear anything yet?Only one more month of this anxiety right?!!? : )

Not yet. Yeah, only! lol

I tried an online chat and they said it might not be until the end of April! yikes! i guess mid april is what the goal is but it might not be until later. i asked if they just had a lot more apps this year and she said yes.... pretty scary! if anything this is a good lesson in patience for me : )

Yes, we will need a lot of patience going into this field so might as well practice now. :) Think of it this way, the end of the month is only 25 days away. haha.

Hi Everyone! I applied for the Fall 2012 cohort for Depaul's MENP. I have been stalking admissions and they keep saying we will know if we are admitted by the end of April. Longest wait of my life! I have a couple questions for all other applicants, if you don't mind, would you guys want to share some information about eachother? Did anyone else apply for any other programs/ hear back from anywhere? What where your stats (GPA, GRE, etc...) Crossing my fingers that these next couple weeks fly by and we all hear good news!!

I know! I hate this wait but hopefully it will be good news in the end right?I also applied to loyola for the absn tract.I have a ba in psychology and a gpa of 3.99 (3.5 at the community college) I still have some pre-reqs out which has me sweating this decision out! Working on inorganic chem now and taking org chem in the summer. I hope this doesn't hurt me too bad : (I have worked in healthcare most of my life but have been out of it for 12 years while having and raising a family. Let's see I was an emt, worked in dispatch, was a unit secretary, worked for hand surgeons, worked in nursing homes and did a very short week as an or tech.I am super excited to get back into healthcare and can't wait to see how much has chanted!I just ordered my stethoscope after combing the boards here to see what is the best option and cannot wait to play wi my new toy : ) in other words I'm an all around health care dork : )Ok someone else has to go now- don't let me be the ony one out here : )Renee

Thanks for sharing Renee, wow I am very impressed and sure that you will have no difficulty getting in! Where did you receive your bachelors degree at and have you heard back from Loyola yet?? I am graduating with a BA in Health and Human Physiology from the University of Iowa. I have taken three years of chemistry and struggled with all three years. I thought about going to school for Dentistry which required several courses of chemistry, only to discover that my passion was in Nursing and I only needed two chemistry courses. Needless to say all of the chemistry and upper level biology courses required for pre-dent really took a beating on my GPA. I took all of my courses and Iowa and have an overall 3.2 GPA, 3.8 major GPA. I also took the GRE with a score of 1000 and a 4.5 writing. I volunteered in the Emergency room at a Hospital, shadowed in Pediatrics Oncology and currently work at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the heart and vascular center scheduling. I also applied to UIC and Rush. UIC makes you choose your specialty prior to admissions, in which I chose pediatrics only to discover there are only 5 spots in the program. We are supposed to hear back next week but I think it is safe to say I will not be admitted to UIC. I have an interview at Rush on April 10th which I am very excited about! Just hoping to hear back from DePaul soon too! I know there will be a lot of competitive students and with my low GRE/GPA I am very nervous!

I got my BA with Argosy. I had to do it online since I had a baby and couldn't go to classes. I wanted to do something while being a stay at home mom instead of waiting to start after the kids were in school kwim?

Yes I was accepted to loyola:w00t:. i have heard its a good program however i am confused by their pass rates. on their site it says 100% but the reports from 2011 say 81% i think .

3 years of chemistry? yikes! i give you ALOT of credit! this is the hardest class i have ever taken!

you have a great healthcare history! when i was talking to an advisor with depaul a few months ago he said that is one of the main things besides grades that they look at. As i said earlier i am stunned by how many people want to become nurses with no background in healthcare at all.

i just read that article on this site that said 30-50% of new nurses change careers after the first year (those numbers may be off as i can't remember them exactly however you get the idea) and some of the reasons were that they didn't find their "niche" or emotional burnout. it also said that many get into nursing simply for the money- which i think is a joke considering the amount of work involved- but many go into this field blind which is sad. the one good thing is that you can take a nursing degree and pretty much go anywhere/do anything. --yikes sorry for the ramble

I had also looked at UIC but i agree- i didn't like the idea of choosing a speciality before ever stepping foot on the floor. I know the area i would *like* to go into but heck- that may change as i go through clinicals - as i am sure is the same for everyone else. Plus i am terrified of the GRE test! and UIC looks impossibly competitive- however i wish you luck:up:

Rush for some reason has never appealed to me- i'm not sure why. I go to school with a girl who also applied to depaul and rush- rush is her first choice- and she was excited about the interview as well. again i wish you luck!
