Applying for UIC College of Nursing BSN program 2011

hi everyone:)

i am planning on doing the early application for fall of 2011. i was hoping you guys could fill me in on some things.

Does anyone know how essential it is to have experience volunteering or working at a hospital to get into UIC because i am having a lot of difficulty volunteering at any hospital. they have waiting lists and i am not a CNA or anything. has anyone been accepted without that experience?

i do have a 3.8 GPA, finished with most prereqs at one of the city colleges, and can write some good essays but is that enough?

are there any transfer students here who got accepted into the program or who are going to apply?

also, has anyone here tried applying for early admissions and got pushed to regular admissions? and if so, were you accepted in regular admissions?

Hi guys,

I'm currently a student at oakton. I'm planning to apply for UIC fall 2014 program. I'm just really confused on the supplement application and the essay questions. Can you guys please give me any advice for the essays. I have gotten Nurse Care Technician training for advocate Lutheran General Hospital but I just volunteer there right now. I have been volunteering since 2010. My GPA is 4.0 right now. I'm talking my first A&P 1 right now. I have about 33 credit hours that can transfer to UIC. I'm just confused on what to write. I just don't know where to start writing. Please the people who have actually gotten accepted here, can you please give me some useful advice? The question in supplement application are:

What is your understanding of the role of the professional nurse and why have you chosen to pursue nursing as a career? (maximum 400 words)

What qualities do you believe you possess that will help you be successful as a nursing student and later as a nurse? (maximum 250 words)

Describe a stressful or challenging situation you have experienced and how you dealt with it. Looking back, would you do anything differently. Please explain. (maximum 500 words)

What experiences have prepared you to work with diverse populations (e.g., racial/ethnic, age, gender, socio-economic) seeking healthcare? What is your understanding of cultural sensitivity? (maximum 500 words)

Please describe a situation in which you were called upon to act in a leadership role? (maximum 400 words)

What are your plans for being a full-time nursing student? Address time management, finances, and how you will balance family, work, and other commitments with full-time study. (maximum 250 words)

P.S. I just need advice. Don't worry I'm not telling anyone to write my essays so no offense to anyone. I want help from people who have actually gone through this process and have been successful. THANKS

Hi there NikitaPatel I'm a UIC-CON alumni now. I transferred into UIC's nursing program from a community college and only had volunteer experience as well so it is possible. From my experience with the application essay I would say think of it like a creative writing piece. Enhance, exaggerate, and creatively make yourself look like the most amazing candidate for a spot in the class. Make your experiences sound very unique and personal. Definitely use your volunteer experiences and your nurse care tech experiences in the essay. Make yourself standout. And be sure to all the word space available. When you finish your first draft or maybe even just one question go to a professor, library, or writing lab at your college and ask someone to edit it, help you revise it, and ask for advise on how you can make it better and then move on to your next draft. That is how I went about it and I repeated that process a few times before I was confident enough to submit the app. Hope this helps. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask. Hi browneyedgirl0108, I am also trying to transfer to UIC for nursing and i have some questions! I don't have all my science prereq's done and I won't have three completed by the time of application. I know that they say to have three done but I didn't know where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do and when I decided to transfer to UIC for fall 2014 I realized I didn't have enough time to get them done before the application deadline. I'm not sure how high my chances are for getting in and I was hoping you could give me some insight! I currently work at a nursing home and I have volunteered at a hospital and I have a 3.0 GPA and will hopefully have a 3.3 or a 3.6 by the time I apply! Thanks!
