2010 DePaul Masters Entry Cohort

Hi all, I am new to allnurses. I just found out that I will be accepted into the DePaul masters entry program in 2010 and I was wondering if anyone else out there got the same great news! :yeah: My question is if anyone else in the 2010 cohort or other cohorts that would like to get together and rent a house in the area! I think it could really benefit all of us if we lived together! I am a 23 year old female who is a serious student but a fun person! I'm just curious why you are doing a masters entry cohort? What are the benefits when you only need to be prepared at the associate's/bachelor's level? Once you have completed the bachelor's do you take the nclex or do you have to wait until you complete your master's degree? Sorry for the questions but I am just puzzled why someone would do this. It just seems like an added expense to go for the MSN. What are the goals of the master - is it geared towards NP, CRNA, or CNS? I'm not against additional education but just curious what the benefit is cause I really don't think you make a whole lot more money if you are at the RN level. Hope this makes sense. BTW, I looked on the DePaul website and it wasn't clear.

DePaul's program is geared towards people who a)don't want just another bachelors when they already have one, b) don't want to take a mess of weird prereqs ("Human development across the lifespan"? ***?), and c)are planning on going on to either get a research PhD or to some sort of APN certification. Included in our coursework is approximately the first year's worth of courses required for any flavor of APN, and we all have to do a masters thesis which could be further developed into a PhD should we choose. We're all fully aware that we won't make any more at the beginning - it's all about where we'll want to go after we get established in nursing.

Also, a BSN isn't included at all. We take the NCLEX-RN after we graduate from the MS in General Nursing program.

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense. For some reason I was thinking this was for someone with no college and it took you all the way through from freshman to masters. I guess then that the classes are very accelerated. I'm currently doing accelerated classes and they are no fun.

I make more.... I work at a union facility and I make more per hour due to the masters... its not much - but it adds up. Almost $4 more an hour for regular day shift........

It probably will be, though it lacks the peds-sized diaphragm that Littmann's Cardio III has, instead having just a bell.

I have a question about the books...do we need the Mosby's nursing video skills-student version DVD 3.0 with the Clinical Nursing Skills and Techniques.

I found it helpful to see the skills on video before trying to perform them in lab, so I appreciated having the DVDs. YMMV.
