Is your mobile office tidy and organized, or is it a heaping mess? Any brave souls willing to share pictures?

I start a new job in a few weeks and would love some ideas about how to set up my SUV!!!

Specializes in Dialysis, Med Surg, Home Care.

Well, I admit it...Mine is a horrible mess!!! I had an SUV--Kia Sorrento--and just traded it in last weekend, so I know very well how big a mess it was! I have 2 plastic bins, filled with supplies such as oral syringes, tape, wound care, chux, gait belts, etc. I also carry several of those recycle grocery bags. One has urinary supplies (catheters, bags, leg straps, etc); one has emesis basins, urinals, bedpans; one has assorted wound care dressings; and one has skin care supplies, soaps, creams, etc. I also carry printer paper, more diapers and chux stuffed into corners! I carry a small portable fan, (some homes don't have a/c in Florida and it gets hot!) a camping chair and a laptop lap desk. I also carry my own flat sheet (just to cover a chair or sofa I have to sit on that may be less than desirable. And bug spray (for the obvious!) my back seat carries assorted fast food wrappers and drink cups that are tossed over my shoulder! Front passenger seat has my rolling suitcase with my work laptop and portable printer and extension cords along with various electric adapters so I can plug in. Then the floorboard carries my personal rolling suitcase with my personal computer, Kindle Fire, internet card and my food and drink for the night! Yep, it's a mess and I have to clean everything out tomorrow and put in the new car before my shift tomorrow night. I also have to say, I work 12 hour night shifts in Crisis Care. I don't want to get stuck out in the middle of the night without supplies that I need for the patient!! I also carry the much needed vitals kit, gloves, sharps containers, backup syringes, documentation sheets (just in case my laptop crashes) and just darn near anything I might possibly need!!

I do primarily admissions for the company I work for so what I carry in my car would be somewhat different than the case managers. Following is how I organize my car:

Behind the back seat:

I use a long narrow see-through storage bin for all my catheter supplies and keep that just behind the back seat as I don't have to use it very often.

Two other small see-through bins for other supplies - one carries wound care supplies and the other carries misc. items like paper measuring tapes, alcohol wipes, extra hand sanitizer, etc.

A small fishing tackle box with all my lab supplies.

I keep a few basins together and the top one has lotions, soap, oral sponges, extra sublingual syringes. I keep these supplies covered with a clear plastic bag.

I carry enough diapers, blue chux, gloves, dry wipes, wet wipes for that day's admissions (2) - the rest are stored in a closet at home.

Back seat:

One side is my "dirty" side (sharps).

I keep a small fabric waste receptacle hanging from the back of my passenger seat for all my Starbuck's coffee cups. :) It is easy to keep clean and I don't end up with garbage on the floor at the end of the day.

The seat on the other side has my plastic storage file organizer which carry admit packets, extra forms, lab forms.

Behind my seat I keep my nursing bag (on wheels) which was supplied by my company. It is a really nice bag with plenty of storage areas. One area I keep wound care supplies, another area my stethoscope, BP cuff, extra gloves, another area PPE. Side pocket - hand sanitizer, soap and baggy with paper towels. Front zippered pocket - extra pens, phone and car keys when I leave my car.

I also carry my lunch in the back seat.

Front passenger seat:

I have an organizer hanging from the headrest that includes pens, hand sanitizer, personal items, Kleenex. On the seat laptop, business phone and a small clipboard with an area to store completed admit paperwork.

My Nuvee GPS (can't live without it) sits on my dashboard.

That's about it - I work really long days so the car is only used for work. On my days off (I have several off in a row), I take everything out of my car and store in my home office.

I love my job. :loveya:

It was very interesting reading these posts. I also, work and live out of my car. And basically, I carry about the same things. In the trunk, I have a large tub filled with all sorts of medical supplies, such as dressing supplies, foley's, syringes, and IV supplies, etc. It is packed full. Also, in the trunk there are diapers/blue pads, and several totes one tote is for when I go to pronounce someone who has died, oh by the way, I'm a hospice nurse. And the other tote, has an extra change of clothes in case of contamination. And of course, there is always those pieces of papers that is needed for various reasons. And I have a lab bag to transport labs.

In the back seat, it usually is full of supplies to be delivered to patients. The floor board normally full of fast food bags and empty drink cups. The front seat usually is full of my computer and my bag that carries my BP/stethoscope.

I carry 2 cell phones and a beeper so I can be reached easily.

I love my job, and really enjoy my patients.
