suprapubic catheters

I was surprised to hear after many years working in the hospital, now only in home health 3 months, that nurses change suprapubic catheters in the home. My supervisor went with me and I observed procedure. Pts wife very anxious about someone new doing catheter. I would have to change it next time though. I think she is going to make me very nervous!!

I have only seen two patients with SP catheters in the home. One of them, the nurses changed routinely, as well as changing the G tube regularly. The other one started to give trouble at my last visit. The supervisor was there and she was asking me about the problems with it. It seems I did the last shift for the agency before this patient went totally private. I hope it didn't fail on her. What a way to start out when you have no real backup anymore.

Yeah, I've seen a dozen or so SP's in the home and sure, we did the routine changes. The only time that it's really done outpatient is for the first few changes after the original establishment of the SP.

I've done many SP caths in home care. HC is actually where I was taught how to change one......never had to before starting HHC.
