ok...i have been a nurse for about 18 months now..i know this because my sign on bonus slaved labor is completed..so now after having worked 18 months fresh out of school on a med./surg floor...i want out!!! I am strung out and need a change. I have been struggling with my options and am curious about home health. one of my concerns is money..I need to make it...but dont want to bust my bum i am used to prn 3 days a week..and second of all I am terrified that out on my own i will fail and not be able to care for these people its a safety net in the hospital to have fellow nursed around for guidance etc. I am scared i will be in a situation like a 'code' or i will not detect a non thriving patient..anyway if anyone could advise me i would be so grateful..this has been a very tough decision and i need to get on with it thanks !

I am considering HHC; worked in hospital med/surg and then ambulatory student health. I am scared, but also curious.

but my question is: if per diem HHC RNs are paid per cases, how do you calculate the hours? At interview, they would tell me that their RNs work on average 20-25 hours...but it never occured to me why they were counting hours, when actually paying by cases? Does anyone know what I am mean? thanks

I guess I never heard of people actually paying slaves.... :uhoh21: Was this a job you were forced to take or one you pursued?

No nurse should ever work unsupervised if she/he is "scared" or "terrified." Vulnerable people, your potential home health clients, really need to know that you are confident and competent, but if you are worried that you cannot do the job, you will not be able to prevent your fears from showing.

Change jobs, go to a different hospital, try office nursing, talk with a seasoned nurse about your experiences and see if you can't get a better handle on things.

You wouldn't enjoy home health in that situation either.

Just a thought: does it seem like you are trying to get away from your present situation, as opposed to wanting to do home health? Find something you think you will like and feel good about, and pursue that.

Good luck!
