Nurses Stress 101

Published

I am a tech on a psych unit. Been doing this for 4 1/2 year's. This week had a PT revving up and very disoriented. Started blocking the door out and trying to run off the unit. I had a good rapport with the PT able to talk the PT away from the door. Went well started going back to their room, but busted past me tried holding the PT back, but let go no point to aggravate the situation further. I only yell probably 3 or 4 times in my psych career at a PT. I yelled to the PT to get back to their room. At that point they tried to lunge, make threats, and posture to me and another staff member.

Anyways PT able to go back to their room no incident. Even avoided restraints and give the PT medication they needed.

The reason I post I feel terrible. Is this all happen in front of the PTs parents.

I feel guilty seeing their faces during this whole ordeal and worried about repercussions on myself.

I don't know why I am stressing over this.

Any input can give me.

Don't beat yourself up. Seriously. We all get stressed and psych is no exception.

Debrief with the other staff if possible- talk about the situation and what else could have been done. Talk about other strategies. Figure out what made you yell.

We all have less compassionate days- it's impossible not to. Brush it off and try not to do it again.
