How to effectively manage stress. My most stressfull time is at the end of my shift.

Nurses Stress 101

Published

I am so stressed out at the end of my shift. Unfortunately, I have developed a negative coping mechanism--EATING JUNK FOOD...As a resutl, I am at least 70lb overweight. I have tried exercising but have fallen off the wagon. I work the night shift and often have to deal with my Nurse Manager upon my exit from the the job site. There have been times when she has yelled at me and embarrassed me so bad that I did not know what to do with my self. The staff who witnessed the incidents just looked on and said nothing. I feel intimidated to the point of making errors just based on feeling intimidated. One day she yelled at me in the chart room for not clocking out on time...When I tried to explain why I had not clocked out (due to an incident involving a patient towards the end of the shift) she did not allow me to do so. I need some help, advise, and support.

Sorry you are so stressed. Nursing can be such a rough job.It is never appropriate for your manager to yell at you, especially in a public place. If it were me, I would speak to the nurse manager in private- and let her know that if she has criticisms that you prefer they be directed in private, and without yelling. Are you in a nurses union? I am guessing not. If you do beliong to a union, I would speak to a union rep about what happened. Yelling at an employee in a public setting can be a form of humiliation and bullying. It is sad that the culture at your workplace endures this (your co-workers standing by). Please reach out to whoever is in charge of compliance at your facility if this persists. It's good to talk to close friends or family about stressful events, too...and try to get some support in dealing with negative emotions and experiences. I'm sorry you feel stressed out. I hope you can get some support in this situation.

Hi psalm111, sorry about that. I once felt that way to. :( and I understand the frustration of trying to exercise and not seeing any results or things get too intense that you would fall off the wagon.

Recently however I have felt much better than I ever have. If you need any advise or support i can certainly help you :nurse: you can read my story by going to Team Beachbody - Member Profile

if you are up for it you can go email me or add me on that site and just send me a msg :)

Sorry to hear that . It may be a sign that something better is coming for you. If she yells, just report it to someone in the office. It's not respectful at all . You need to be the one to stand up for your self, and do something about it. It's all about respect and being brave/ if the other employees just stand there, and look then that's not right as well.
