Nurses Stress 101

Published

I have been a nurse for 4 years and I can't imagine doing an ordinary job. But I am currently struggling. I am over this whole night shift thing. I'm starting to get depressed and I am usually the happiest person around. I'm tired of my schedule get moved around, so I work every weekend and holiday. I can't even see my family this holiday season because I work Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Eve. This doesn't seem fair, but because it is the actual day, "it doesn't count as a holiday". I never see my family, and my parents are older. With my current schedule, I don't even get a chance to go out and meet someone.

It is starting to wear on my body. I am almost thinking of looking into a doctor office position, because then at least I have a normal life.

I love the floor I work on, and when I'm working I love it. It's not the job itself that I hate.

When you're working you love it -- you don't want to give up this job! If the schedule is the problem, address that with management. Working every weekend (unless you've agreed to do so) doesn't seem fair, nor does working every holiday. It might be too late to change things for the schedule you're already working on, but you can absolutely talk to your manager or whomever does your schedule about a more "missmaddie" friendly work schedule.

Good luck!
