RN position for new grad

U.S.A. Hawaii

Published

Just took the Hawaii NCLEX-RN exam last Thursday and is officially a RN of Hawaii. :nurse:

Is there a way for me to get a RN job in Honolulu even without any experience at all? If not, where can I volunteer as an RN to get the experience I need? I'm currently in the Philippines and want to go back home in Hawaii, with a job waiting for me. I can't afford to go back home and just start looking for one, it would be a waste of money. So is there a recommended site for me look to search for job openings?

Thank you! :redbeathe

It's real hard finding a job as a new grad here in HI (I myself am a new grad looking for a job). You can try searching HI hospitals for their job listings, but most of them do require experience. I think it's best if you contact their HR departments directly (either call or e-mail) to ask if there are any job opportunities for new grads. Try searching for nursing homes too, some of them said they accept new grads and will train them. Hope that helps :)

Thank you sugar&spice01. I'm searching the net for some nursing home that I can apply when get back home in HI. I took my exam at the Philippines to visit some of my friends and family and it was sorta my short vacation as well. :nurse:

However, have a question for you. Since I'm a newbie for everything, do you it would a good idea to go for bls or acls training while I'm in the Philippines? Since most of the requirements I saw on the net requires "Current bls and acls card". If not, do you any place I can enroll for the bls and acls training near Honolulu? :redpinkhe

I inquired about the fee for the training here, $35 for 1 day for american heart association-BLS training while $190 for the 2day ACLS training. I'm not sure if I'm being ripped off since they offer it for only a day or two considering the price I have to pay.

Yeah, that's one thing I forgot to tell you. You have to be CPR certified. I trained at the American Red Cross, it's in Diamond Head. I paid $110 for CPR/AED for Health Care Professionals, it's one whole day and I think they only have it every Sunday. The one you inquired about is very cheap, I'm not sure but it might be for lay responders only. I'm not ACLS certified yet, because they usually require that for specialized areas, but then you have to have experience too. So I think it's best to be CPR certified first :)

lol.. $110  just for one day? I really like your idea for the CPR certified first than the acls, Hmm, might as well enroll the CPR class next week.

btw, have you tried getting a job at a nursing homes? I'm thinking of getting my first year experience at a nursing home that would hire me.:)

Yeah I sent my resume to some long term care facilities, because I think there's a bigger chance for a new grad to be hired there. But I'm still waiting, I think it's been 2 weeks since I started applying, so hopefully someone calls me soon :) Good luck on your job hunting as well! :)

I am moving to Oahu next May and I am getting really depressed reading about new grad RNs' difficulty finding jobs. I will have 8 months experience as RN, but I work in a prison. I have been an LPN for 11 years prior. Husband is military, so I don't even know of I can use spousal preferance to work at Tripler. Anybody got any advice?

I wish I can send my resume out now, but I'm still waiting for my license mail till now. :crying2: And besides, I don't have a bls certificate yet. :p BTW, will hospital hire me with no skills at all? For example, I don't know how to insert IVF to a patient or insert a foley catheter since my school didn't taught that to us. :crying2:

Good luck to you as well, I do hope someone calls you before the year ends.:yeah:

Hi rizzacalinao

I was in the Philippines with a 1yr experience of being a Physician Assistant while I was waiting for my credentials to be processed by the CGFNS. I thought that the 1yr experience I have would be enough for me to land a job here, sad to say most of the calls or emails I would get would be telling me that my year of experience in the Philippines would not count as I was not practicing in a US territory country. How frustrating was that?

There's not much review centers here compared there where you have review centers to guide you for every board exam there is. But if your planning to take the exam once your here take Kaplan as it is most advertised center I know. or conisder studying for the exam by yourself would be fine as well.

Anyways, good luck.
