I need advice from those who know. I recently got offered a job at queens and at straub. I am stuck. I don't know which one to accept. can anyone working at these hospitals let me know their thoughts etc. I need to make a decision. they are both for the same position, just different hospitals.

are you a nurse? student nurse? new grad? what are your career goals? and what positions have you been offered?

there's a lot to consider but gonna need more info

I am a nurse that got offered a job at both places for medsurg. career wise I really don't know what I want to do. maybe ICU later. right now I like medsurg.

Definitely Queen's. I think you would have more opportunities there, especially if you want to advance in your career.

No, I wish. I just graduated nursing school in December. I have a few colleagues at Queen's, and they all love it. I have heard so many great things about that hospital. I would love to get a job there. They are also a magnet status hospital :)

I'm hoping to get a couple years of experience, then try to get a job in Hawaii. You are definitely right, the hunt for the first job is definitely hard. Did you work as a aide? Or did you get hired as an RN fresh out of school?

yeah the hunt for that first job was very difficult so just take it wheverr it is. I did not have to work as an aid actually. I hear a lot have to though. I was lucky enough to get into a new graduate program at a smaller hospital on another island and now I finally applied to the "bigger" hospitals here in Hawaii. where did you graduate from?

I am quite disappointed that one of the nurse managers at Queen's called and left me a voicemail about three weeks ago, because she got my application from one of the job fair, and I guess, wanted to communicate with me. But when I called her back and left numerous messages on her answering service, she never bothered to call me back. It's as if QMC doesn't want me. Plus I have volunteered for more than 300-plus hours at QMC. I guess volunteer work for this particular hospital doesn't really count.

Question for you. How long after you've graduated from nursing school did you take your NCLEX? I know the recommended time duration is no more than two months. How did you prepare for this rigorous board exam? Kaplan? Hurst review?

hey there! I actually took a little longer. I graduated school in may and I took a little time off. I took the nclex in December. so it was more than four months. I guess the amount of time you need depends on the individual. I felt I needed a little more time. to prepare for the test I first used the Saunders review book. I used this first because it helped me brush up on content only. I would dedicate a whole week to a certain system, ie one week for GI, and so on and so forth. once I felt confident with the material I did Kaplan. Kaplan is good to help you with test taking and how to select the right answer. do what got you through nursing school. you went to the job fair? when did you graduate nursing school? what kind of nursing experience do you have besides volunteer work?

keep on calling and be persistent. once they see this they for sure have to listen to you.

Kaplan is good to help you with test taking and how to select the right answer. do what got you through nursing school. you went to the job fair? when did you graduate nursing school? what kind of nursing experience do you have besides volunteer work?

Sure, I will look at also taking the Kaplan course. For me, I definitely want to take the NCLEX-RN within a month month period. No more than 45-days post graduation for me. =)

I graduate in May of this year.

I went to one of the QMC job fairs this year. This is how they got my information. I got a call from one of the department nurse managers. I couldn't pick up the phone, so she left me a message. called her back numerous times, and left numerous voicemails on her answering service. Wup wup, no luck, and she never even bothered to call me back. I find it so upsetting that I have volunteered over 300 hours to this hospital, yet get no job preference in the application pool. Heck, I also applied for a job in another department, only to learn that another nursing student got hired for that on-call position. I hate to play the sex-card, but I feel that male nursing applicants, whether it's RN position, or CNA position, get the short-end of the stick.
