Hi,

Are there any USPHS commissioned officers who can share their experiences working in IHS facilities?

What is it like living in rural areas? Please share your stories with me because I am interested in joining USPHS upon graduation (finishing up my BSN and will be done in May).

Thank you :)

Woohoo! just started the process for SRCOSTEP! Prescreen down! From reading this thread, I have a long ways ahead of me.

A long, hard bumpy ride that will be rewarding in the end.

I'm just browsing the web for PHS nurses potions in my area and i'm not seeing any openings unless i have the equivalent education/experience of a GS-9 or higher. i've been looking at http://phs-nurse.org/index.php and it sent me to http://www.usajobs.gov/. there's nothing for new grads...

am i doing this too early? i'm not scheduled to graduate untill the winter of 2011. on the side not, i noticed some of the information is out dated. http://phs-nurse.org/recruitment.html FY09? sometimes the links are dead ends also...

I live near NIH in montgomery county, MD. any sugestions on how to find jobs near my location? i'm applying for SRCOSTEP, but if there's no future in this area what's next? is there anyway to find out or does everyone go through SRCOSTEP blind and hope they stay local?

is there anyone that can guide me in the right direction?

What's a good GPA to maintain while in SRCOSTEP?

Hi,

I'm just starting the process and after reading all this will try and be patient!

Is anyone an FNP or know if there is a great need for FNP's? I'm hoping to relocate to NM and work in the IHS.

Thanks for any info!

Tracy

Does anybody have contact info for Butner North Carolina medical facility. I am applying to the USPHS and am finishing my BSN degree in August. I am heavily interested in that facility thanks!

Hi I was wondering if anybody understands how to read the application status screen. My lists all the required paperwork does that mean I have completed it and they have it or that they are waiting for it? Thanks for the help!

Is it possible to find ICU positions with USPHS. It seems like more are centered around medical surgical or occupational health type of nursing. I am interested in critical care but am also open to anything!

THanks!

Is it hard getting into the USPHS what kind of credentials are they looking for?

To partially answer chul_soo's question, in the confirmation email I received for successful completion of the pre-screen, the email stated to contact the individual facility to see if they are going to sponsor any future SRCOSTEP applicants. It said this would improve your chances of being selected by the facility. So it would appear that you may have some input on the facility your assigned to if selected for the SRCOSTEP program.

So my question is, has anyone ever contacted a facility to inquire about the sponsorship of SRCOSTEP applicants? If so, how did you go about contacting them?

Hello - I am very interested in applying for the public health corp, and I have several questions.

Has anyone received the sign on bonus and do you know what the qualifications for this bonus are?

Does anyone know if there is any kind of tuition reimbursement program for those of us that want to return to school?

What about loan repayment?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

I thought I'd let you know how my application is progressing.

I'm a Family Nurse Practitioner and my application was received 6/11/10.

It isn't showing up on the "check status" link. I applied to a position with an agency also (as the website advises) and have visited the facility and been offered a position as long as my application with the agency checks out.

I contacted the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC) and was told they do have my appllication. The person I spoke with advised me to accept the position as a GS employee and then convert to a PHSCC officer later. They told me they really aren't processing any applications at this time due to the health reform bill changes.

Putting the application together is a lot of work! I hope things open up soon. I'll take the job as GS and hope for the best. The Web site http://www.usphs.gov/ makes it look as if they really need people but it doesn't seem so.
