USAGPAN 2018

I noticed someone had started a thread to rally up nurses applying to the USAGPAN class starting this year so I thought I'd do the same for next year's class! I'll be speaking with a recruiter soon, but I hope to begin the application process very soon! I have about 2 years of critical care experience, just took my GRE and I'm scheduled to take my CCRN next month. I'll be doing that biochem class sometimes before June as well. Anyone else out there applying for next year's Army Nurse Anesthesia Program?

We really like the area we're in. There are several other apartment complexes nearby that would also be good options. Legacy Heights is right off Austin Highway. There are a few students who live there this year. Some of those units have attached garages and fenced in back yards. The area outside of the complex isn't wonderful (lots of bus stops with homeless people wandering about and things), but the complex is HUGE, so your wife could probably go for walks within the gate and feel very safe. I feel safe in our surrounding neighborhood when I take my 2 young kids on walks. Also, we go on post a lot and walk the track, so there are options, aside from your neighborhood. I also know families who live off of Woodlake Pkwy (which is just off a big road called Rittiman). It's a gated community less than 10 mins from post. there's a community pool and they pay under BAH.

This is good information. Thank you. The three bedroom at your complex is pricey. Is it doable with the 2LT pay and BAH? My wife doesn't work and we were considering maxing out rent payments at $1800.

How's everyone doing in this process? I am waiting to commission and take the OPAT. I've heard end of January is the tentative report date to San Antonio.

We do it on O1E pay. I'm not working this year and we have 2 small children. It is pricey. I don't think we'd do it again, just because there is bigger out there (and things more suited for families) for less than what we pay. They did just start a military discount, but I have no idea what it is. But, we do love being so close to base and feeling safe all the time. and I love that my husband is home in less than 10 mins, vs the 30+ a lot of people experience. We never run into rush hour traffic because we don't have to take the major highways/interstates to get to post.

The best places I've found are up toward the Hollywood Park area along 281 near the loop. But even those are hit or miss with parking issues and even crime, according to the reviews.

If anyone has suggestions please post them. I've got three days to find a place next week while I'm in town. Need a 3 bedroom and we are willing to pay more for a good place.

If you want to rent a house, I'd recommend using a realtor or AHRN.com. Realtors will help you find a rental and it's totally free for you. They usually just ask that you refer them to others.

Does anyone know how the schools (for dependents) work when someone is active duty? Particularly, i'm interested in high schools. i found one relatively good public high school but it's pretty far from the base if we want to live in it's zone. Other good schools appear to be magnet or charter and don't have zones. There's also a school on Randolph AFB but i'm not sure whether one has to live on the base or be in AF for the kids to attend. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I was wondering if anyone from previous years has had experience with being on the OML list. I was told there are five of us on it. What's the likelihood of getting picked up?

I don't know what the process is for applicants who are waitlisted. As far as we know, they did not have a waitlist for FY17.

I honestly have no idea about the waitlist. I was told about it when I interviewed but from what I've read in the past there hasn't been one.

Well, what I've read from posts from previous years is that there have been wait lists. (search OML or order of merit list on this site) The USAGPAN program director mentioned in his email, the one telling me I am waitlisted, that they would reach out to me in the next several weeks. I'm assuming in the case that someone drops their slot, the would begin pulling from the list. But I also read that sometimes they are able to get more slots allocated depending on the budget. I was just curious if anyone that's been following this forum knows anything about it. As you might imagine, I'm spinning my wheels with anticipation hoping I somehow get a slot! lol

I was notified today that I was pulled from the wait list! Best Christmas present ever! Can't wait to meet you guys next year!

So happy that you made it!!!! See you soon!
