Relocating with family questions (AF nurses)

Ok, so we call Keesler Housing and were informed that we cannot be setup in base housing until after he completes COT. We can get a short term lease until then.

WELL,

That's dumb, because then we have to move twice, not to mention I can just stay here and work because we definitely need the money and it will cover any lapse of insurance for me and the kids. So here's the questions that I have:

Did your families move with you? If not, how was it coordinated?

Also, will he be given days between COT and NTP to look for housing or will that be left up to me? We have family within 30 minutes of the area that my daughter and I can stay with once we move, before we set up housing, but I don't want to impose on her any longer than need be, especially with a 9 month old.

TIA! As I think of others, I'll add them.

Thanks for the info. I hope you get your pay straightened out soon. I know that is frustrating. I'm going to check into usaa. Thanks for the advice.

USAA rocks, completely. As a military brat, I've been privileged to be a member of USAA for many, many years. I use USAA for our savings account, auto insurance, car loans, and home insurance. I would have used them for our mortgage, but a local broker had a slightly more competitive rate (darn!). Their checking account will also allow you to deposit checks by scanning them in, which is great since you could be anywhere in the world. :) We use a local bank for our checking account only because my husband gets paid in cash only (he's a tattoo artist), and I don't think I can deposit cash by scanning it in. LOL

Thanks for the information about Tricare. I really want to make sure everything will be taken care of for the kids.

After talking it over with my husband, we will probably stay in MS while he is at NTP in Vegas. My aunt lives in Gautier, so my daughter and I will stay with her so that I can look into housing if we decide not to stay on base. Plus I won't have to drive the 2 hours from my parents house to get anything done on base. Now we are still wondering what we will need to do with all of our things until we have housing set up. Is there a storage facility provided by the AF or do we have to provide an address for them to deliver to? If we can't set up housing until after he completes COT we won't have an address other than my aunt's, but who wants to move twice?

You do not have to move 2 times. You set up your move with TMO, now it is even done online. They pack up your house and will store it for up to 90 days until you have a place. Once you find a home, you call them or go online and set up a date of delivery. Mine got delivered in just a couple of days. Sadly, I have lots of damage. Many people have none. I just keep getting unlucky lately. (my garage door died today! lol). I took pictured of everything and can prove the damage was not preexisting. The inspector comes next week. The claims process is just annoying, but doable. I think I'm just jinxed. :)

Your husband needs to speak with the Transportation people to see what your options are. Not sure where they are located at in your area. Hopefully the recruiter will know. If not go to a reserve unit (any service) in your area and ask the full time military there where it is at along with contact info.
