Possible to go from Hospital Corpsman to Nursing School?

Hello everyone! Currently I am a 11th grade male student ( In high school )

I've tried asking my counselors about my career path, but they aren't very helpful at my school...

I have quite a few questions to ask, and since you guys are experts they should be no problem:P

So basically to start off, after high school I want to join the Navy and be a Hospital Corpsman. After serving, I want to enroll into a nursing program in Seattle. Then, I love all types of nursing but two keep coming to mind.. ER and NICU. Those two sound the most appealing to me and the best place for me too be in.

So a few questions..

1. Should I do the entire Hospital Corpsman thing? I really want to join the Navy. I know you can do this through nursing also, but I'd like to go right away. I really want that military experience.

2. The GI bill..I don't know very much about it. Will this help me pay for college? I literally have 0 money for college..okay maybe like $250-500 but that's not much.

3. Chemistry..Right now I am in it and I am getting a B-. Quarter ends very soon, and I'm afraid this class will hold me back. It is OPTIONAL at my school, so can I make it up in college? I am trying my hardest and the teacher just isn't my way of learning.

4. NICU...I heard men shouldn't do this, but then I hear it's a great place. What's your opinion on it? I know NICU and ER are complete opposites practically.

5. How hard do I need to work in Highschool? I'm really pushing myself. I'm taking 7 classes going from 6:45 AM to 3. I am vice president of 2 clubs, treasurer of another, section leader + maybe president of band next year, helps at food bank, in a lot of clubs, and in classes like APUSH, Chemistry, AP lit, Spanish II, Algebra 2..I am at a 3.45 GPA. Am I good? Or am I behind with GPA?

Hello,

I was in the Navy as a hospital corpsman and then became a surgical tech trained in the navy. I was in for 5 years! Had a great time learned a lot. I did get out and was a surgical tech doing open heart surgery for many years while I was going to community college getting my ADN using the GI Bill. I am now a nurse working in the operating room and working on my BSN online.

It is totally do able, it just takes time. It's really all about what you want to do with your life. Do you want life skills from the military then go to school to become a nurse?

Do you want to go start to school right out of high school, then you need to really check with your counselor about your grades.

If you attend school after the military they don't really look at your high school grades as much.

Keep us updated and ask more questions if you have them.

Have you ever thought about doing ROTC while going to nursing school?
