Physical requirements to be a Navy nurse

I just read something on the requirements for a recruit who joins the military as far as the physical requirements go. I was wondering what they are for nurses because I'm not sure if the requirements for the soldiers are the same for the nurses in the Navy. If the requirements are different (I read the soldiers have to do a tredmill test and I hope that doesn't have to be for Navy nurses), please tell me. Thank you!

Yes no coffee! The navy does officer training a little different. You have to stay in the dorms/barracks. No staying in hotels! You can drive there, but you aren't allowed to even get in your car until the weekend before graduation when you have off base liberty.

The navy changed OIS around over the past few yrs, and have made it to be more like bootcamp.

Hi,

I am just in the beginning of my ADN program. I am turning 30 this year. I currently have a second bachelor's degree. With that being said, for the security of my family and bettering of myself I am considering going into the nurse corp after I finish my BSN. I have committed to a hospital for 2 years, but I know this will only help me in the long run, so ultimately, I would be 34 when applying. Are the officer candidate reviews annually or every 6 mos? Also, I had financial trouble in my early 20's do you think that will hold me back? I appreciate all the assistance.

Heather

As far as I know the nurse candidate program is annually and the application process begins in October. This year they are only selecting 25 people and already 10 have been chosen! I just began the process and will turn in all the parts probably by the end of this week. There is sooo much paper work and loops that you have to go through.... as for the financial trouble... they do ask in a background check form (SF86) if you have every claimed bankruptcy and defauted on stuff...things like that. So I am not sure if that would hold you back b/c I never asked the recuiter about that b/c it was never a question of mine. Well good luck with everything!

Yes no coffee!

I am soooo in trouble. I guess I should start cutting back now in anticipation of leaving in July.

What's the deal with Drill Instructors at OIS (if that's even what they are called)? My husband, a former Marine, said that they are all Marines. Is that true? He really wants me to be yelled at by Marines.

I'm not sure what mean about "the deal" with the DI, but yes they are really Marine DI that have been DI at Marine bootcamps in San Diego and Parris Island. Yes its true they will yell at you. I was yelled at many of times by SSG Kirby (he was my DI at OIS).

Hello,

I think it is a wise idea, otherwise you may have to suffer the near weeklong coffee withdrawl MIGRAINES! Yeowch. I have gone from high consumption to cold turkey twice, (have taken breaks from coffee more than this but, from high consumption 2x).

Oh my throbbing headaches!

Much better to cut back first.

I remember when I was pregnant I got those HAs too. It was so torturous that my MD told me to continue with one cup per day to save myself the pain. Weaning is good!

Thanks NavyNurse06! The "deal" I was looking for was about the Marine DIs (because I didn't believe my husband--thought he was just trying to mess with me). I guess I'll be wise to keep my eyes (and ears) out for SSG Kirby. My husband would LOVE to be there when I get my head taken off.

Kirby's not there any more. My class was his last; we went to school after my class, and then he was going to officer training too.

But there's someone there to replace him.

Just out of curiosity since there's a lot of questions about the OIS, how much is the OIS like the naval academy or an NROTC program (considering that the OIS is 5 weeks and NROTC or the Naval academy is 4 years of training)?

Well I've never been to either one (Naval Academy or NROTC) so I really can't tell you.

What I can say is this now its very similar to enlisted bootcamp, and this is per the prior enlisted that were in my OIS class.

OMG I have stayed in a dorm like setting in years. Tell me how that actually is??? putting a 30 girls living in one room for 5 weeks does not sound fun, brings back college memories. Is it really as bad as it sounds
